Tanzania | To Upgrade Access Road to Mahale Mountains National Park to Boost Tourism

The Tanzanian government announced on 18th November 2025 to upgrade a 38 kilometres access road linking Rukoma village and Mahale Mountains National Park in Uvinza District within Kigoma region in the northwestern corner of Tanzania, on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyica, to improve visitor access and boost tourism.

Kigoma Regional Commissioner Simon Sirro said that the road and its poor condition have been a barrier, with previous travel times from Kigoma, main city and lake port in Kigoma District taking five to six hours and instructed Uvinza District Council to prioritse the works to benefit visitors and local communities.

Mahale Mountains National Park named after the Mahale Mountains range is a stunning natural area highlighted by diverse forested habitats, and a beautiful location on the shore of Lake Tanganyica, one of the largest and deepest freshwater lake in the world, it  has crystal – clear waters, powder - white sand beaches and a a vibrant marine ecosystem.

Highlighted by by dramatic mountains with peaks over 2.400 metres, Mahale Mountains National Park features lush forests that transition from tropical rainforest to woodlands and grasslands.

The park is one of the best places in Africa to track and observe wild chimpanzee in their natural habitat, it is also home to other primates including red colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and vervet monkeys. Other wildlife includes buffalo, elephant, leopards, lions, and a variety of birds and fish

The National park offers various outdoor activities include chimpanzee trekking, boating, swimming, and hiking.

Mahale’s Chief Warden, Assistant Park Commissioner Halid Mngofi reported visitor growth from 210 in 2020/21 to 923 in 2023/24, but noted that rainy - season conditions still push tourists to rely on air access, alongside challenges of encroachment, poaching and human – wildlife conflict.

Industry reaction was cautiously supportive, Nomad Tanzania, a luxury safari company specializing in tailor - made safari experiences across Tanzania said improved road access could broaden appeal if managed well, urging sensible visitor to protect the park’s estimated 900 chimpanzees and to sustain conservation outcomes.
