The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) , described as the world’s largest archaeological museum in the world for a single civilization as the Egyptian located about 2 kilometres from the iconic Giza Pyramid Complex in Giza, a city in Egypt situated on the west bank of the Nile near Cairo, two weeks after its inauguration is limiting visiting time due to a huge influx of visitors.
About two weeks after the official opening on November 1, 2025, visiting time at the museum will be restricted, with entrance tickets being booked only for certain times.
The museum is implementing timed - slots and requiring advance online bookings, especially on weekends and public holidays due to an overwhelming number of visitors.
Starting December 1, 2025, tickets will only be sold online until further notice, a measure which is intended to better manages visitor flow, ensure safety, and maintain a high - quality experience for everyone.
According to a spokesman, so far, on average, about 19.000 people have arrived daily to admire the legendary treasures contained in the museum include the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun and tens of thousands of other pieces of of about 3.000 years of ancient Egypt, having exceeded the capacity of its current ticketing and entry systems and the the high expectations of the Egyptian authorities.
If current visitor numbers hold up through the year, the Grand Egyptian Museum is well on its way to becoming one of the most visited museums in the world. Only the Louvre in Paris and the National Museum of China in Beijing registered, according to official data, a higher average of visitors last year.
