Kenya | Signed Four Financing Agreements with the EU to Support Green Transition, Climate Resilience and Biodiversity Conservation

 Kenya and the European Union signed four financing agreements worth Sh4.8 billion on 14th November 2025 in occasion of a meeting which took place in the capital of the country, Nairobi, a plan focuses  to support the green transition, climate resilience, biodiversity conversation and accelerating the shift toward a circular economy ahead the seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA - 7) will take place from 8th to 12th December 2025 at the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi. 

The event under the theme “Advancing sustainable solutions for a resilient planet" will include actions include adopting the Medium - Term strategy for 2026 - 2029 and approving the Programme of Work and Budget for 2026 - 2027. The high - level segment will feature a multi - stakeholder dialogue and sessions on topics like the global hyrological cycle, nutrient pollution, and the role of AI in environmental sustainability. 

The funding deriving from the agreements signed by Kenya and the EU aims to strengthen climate governance, restore degraded landscapes, and expand green economic opportunities, measures that underpin destination resilience, wildlife habitats and community livelihoods linked to tourism.

The package includes : 

·       •    Sh600 million for an emission Measurement, Reporting and Verification system to track progress on Kenya’ s NDCs.

•    Sh2.1 billion to restore the Lake Baringo watershed, co - financed by the EU, Germany and Italy and implemented by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

•    Sh 1.3 billion for community conservancies and biodiversity protection in northern Kenya led by the International Union Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

•    Sh 750 million for the Switching Kenya Green programme, implemented by Hivos, an international development organisation guided by humanist values to help MSMEs adopt sustainable practices and create green jobs. 

EU officials highlighted close alignment on environmental priorities as Kenya prepares to play a leading role at UNEA - 7.
