The country has completed the nationwide rollout of its Passport Seva Programme 2.0 (PSP 2.0) promised earlier this year, which includes issuing e - passports with embedded chips to all citizens to boost global travel security and efficiency.

The upgraded platform offers a unified network for faster processing, greater transparency, and improved service delivery across the passport ecosystem.

Designed with a strong focus on user convenience, the revamped platform introdcues real - time assistance through AI - driven chat voice tools, simplified online applications, auto - filled digital forms, and streamlined electronic payment options. These features aim to reduce waiting times and make passport application more accessible to Indian citizens.

The new e - passport contains embedded microchips that securely store personal and biometric data, like fingerprints and facial data, enhancing security and enabling faster airport verification, expected to accelerate identity verification at borders while raditional passports will remain valid until their date of expiry.

The upgraded program also introduces a more integrated, digital system across all passport offices to improve service delivery.

The global phase followed on 28th October 2025, extending the enhanced services to Indian Embassies and Consulates worldwide. The international rollout ensures that Indian citizens living and working abroad gain equal access to the upgraded system.

According to the Ministry, the upgraded programmes reflect the Government’s commitment to adopting advanced digital solutions that simplifiy essential services and enhance the overall travel experience for Indian citizens.
