Mozambique through its President Daniel Chapo has announced plans to grant 10 - year residence visas to investors committing at least US$5 million, and five – year residence for investment from US$500.000.
The initiative was unveiled at the first Mozambique Tourism Summit which took place in Vilankulo or Vilanculos, a coastal town in Mozambique, lying in the Vilanculos District of Inhambane Province.
The event was centred on investment opportunities, public - private partnership (PPP) discussions, and a push for digital transformation in tourism.
The summit had the aim to create a platform to showcase projects, attract capital, and boost Mozambique’s profile as a relevant destination for both leisure and business travel.
The event also focused on raising revenue and growing the tourism sector’s contribution to the GDP, with government priorities including attracting major events and strengthening digital marketing.
The measures to grant residence visas aim to attract capital and ease travel, including facilitating visas for African citizens under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and launching an online platform to obtain tourism and investment remotely.
In addition Mozambique’s President stated that the government will regulate air fares to improve accessibility and liberalise private, domestic and international flights to boost connectivity and high - end tourism.
The President of the African country proposed declaring Inhambane Province as the first Special Golf Tourism Zone, with hubs in Vilankulo, Tofo, a town on the Indian Ocean coast on Praia da Barra peninsula, and Barra, a tourist destination on the Ponta da Barra tip, famous for its pristine beaches, clear waters, and diverse marine life.
Finally Vilankulo was named the country’s tourism capital and is set to host the second summit that will take place in October or November next year.
