KlimaLink, one of the largest tourism projects in the German - speaking world, a Berlin - based association that provides the travel industry with a central platform for clearly and standardizing the display of emission data enters in Portugal to help the tourism industry measure and disclose emissions, aligning with the country’s goal of becoming a leader in sustainable tourism.
Founded in October 2022 by the sustainability initiative Futuoris e.V., with the support of the German Travel Association (DVR), this innovative tool provides comparable and scientifically validated data to support tour operators, travel agencies and destinations in measuring their emissions.
KlimaLink aims to revolutionise climate transparency in tourism and integrates a methodology based on ISO standards and models developed by Atmosfair, a German non - profit organization that actively contributes to CO₂ mitigation by promoting, developing and financing renewable energies in over 20 countries worldwide.
Key features of KlimaLink are its standardized, scierntifically - based calcultation methods that account for both CO₂ and non - CO₂ emissions, providing accurate data for comparing different travel components like flights, accommodation and rental cars, and is expected to integrate buses in the coming weeks and later, trains.
This tool allows allows tour operators and travel agents to access this data into their booking systems, identify and promote climate - friendly offers, empowering consumers to make more informed choices and supporting Portugal’s sustainable strategy.
This uniform, B2B - focused platform that allows operators to calculate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with tourist travel in a standardized and transparent way, is now represented in Portugal by tourism sustainability specialist Paulo Brehm, who is responsible for supporting companies and destnations in integrating the platform into their operations, promoting a more informed, responsible and data - driven approach.
The base version of KlimaLink is free and allows tour operators, DMCs and travel agencies to start registering the emissions associated with their operations right away, and a platform with an API solutions is also available, which enables the automatic integration of calculations into the companies websites and internal systems.
Companies such as Amadeus, Chämaleon, Dertour. Lufhtansa City Center, Olimar snd Studiosus already use this platform which has been recognized internationally, having recently received the German sustainability award 2026, for the sectoral project “Klimabewusst Reisen – Travel with Climate Awareness”, which will be delivered on 4th December 2025, in Düsseldorf.
In a press release, tourism sustainability specialist Paulo Brehm said that transparency from operations is an essential step towards more sustainable tourism. KlimaLink is an accessible platform, based on credible data and independent of commercial interests, which responds to the real needs of companies, and is, above all, simple and practical to use.
