São Paulo, Brazil’s vibrant financial centre, the capital city of the state of São Paulo, as well as the most populous city in the country, the Americas, and both the Western and Southern Hemispheres, located on a plateau that forms part of the Serra do Mar mountain range known as Planalto Brasileiro, 70 km from the Atlantic Ocean and lying precisely on the Tropic of Capricorn, a metropolis well known for its rich architectural tradition, numerous cultural institutions and representing alone, 11% of all Brazilian GDP has been recognized as a creative city of film by UNESCO.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) awarded the Brazilian city which consolidates its status as an important cultural and creative centre of global relevance, as announced by the official website of the Government of Brazil.
This designation places São Paulo within the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), an international group of cities that work together to promote sustainable urban development through creative industries.
São Paulo is being recognized for its inclusive projects and commitment to developing film sector fostering its cultural and creative industries. Being a member of the network allows São Paulo to collaborate with other cities on creative projects and exchange ideas within the film industry.
In addition the Brazilian metropolis is distinguished by its continuous investment in the training of new talent, inclusion and accessibility initiatives in the film industry creating a relevant inclusive film network to promote social cohesion,
The city is also well known for its advanced infrastructure, with 32 movie theatres and an international renowned cultural events agenda linked to the film industry.
With this new recognition Brazil is positioned as the third most active country in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network with 14 participating municipalities. This inclusion in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) reinforces São Paulo and the South American country’s commitment to the development of a creative, sustainable and inclusive economy.
