Parque Nacional de Banhine, Mozambique | Launched a Major Biodiversity Restoration starting Wildlife Reintroduction with 400 animals

The Parque Nacional de Banhine, the National Park of Banhine located in the district of Chibugo between Pafuri in the west and Vilanculos in the east within northern Gaza Province in central southern Mozambique, established on 26 June 1973 has launched a major biodiversity restoration effort with the introduction of 400 animals in what officials describe as a historic step toward ecological renewal.

The park situated between areas featuring wet tropical and dry lands covering an area of 725.043 hectares sits in the heart of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation (GLTFCA) providing vital ecological and touristic links between Limpopo and Zinave Parks in Mozambique and Gonarezhou Park in Zimbabwe.

After the introduction of the 400 anumals, the park aims to receive 1.100 more from other conservation areas by 2026, as part of a long - strategy to restore its ecosystem and revive its former status as a wildlife - rich landscape known as the “Little Serengeti”.

The park is well known for its healthy ostrich population and for the presence of the mini - Okavango that due to its wetlands systems which flood seasonally attracts a wide variety of migratory birds that flock there in en masse.

Recent investments include park infrastructure upgrades, new ranger hires, 35 in 2024 alone, and strengthened community engagement are part of the efforts to elevate the park as a model and a leading attraction in the African continent.

While challenges such as poaching, and bushfires remain, the park’s growing wildlife population is seen as key to boosting eco - tourism.

With new private concession opportunities and community revenue - sharing scheme the Parque Nacional de Banhine is positioning itself as a model for conservation - led development in southern Mozambique.
