The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) , a renowned hospitality firm part of Tata Group and based in Mumbai has unveiled plans to develop a new Taj hotel in Pondicherry, officially known as Puducherry, the capital and most populous city of the Union Territory of Puducherry located on the southeast coast of India surrounded by the Bay of Bengala, a former French colonial settlement in India, bounded by the southeastern Tamil Nadu State.
The city is a notable tourist destination that gained its significance as the “French Riviera of the East” during the French colonisation, and the French legacy is well preserved in its French Quarter highlighted by tree -lined streets, mustard - coloured colonial villas, and chic boutique.
Pondicherry is also highlighted by a stunning seaside promenade and passes several statues, including a 4m - high Gandhi Memorial and other attractions such as Auroville, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, and the Pondicherry Museum.
The hotel will be constructed on a greenfield site, and the project is set to expand the company’s presence in the region and is a collaboration between IHCL and Mr. M.K. Rajagopalan aiming to accommodate the increasing demand for large - scale social events in Pondicherry, a region experiencing growth in both domestic and international tourism and will be constructed on a greenfield site.
The planned Taj Pondicherry will be situated on a 52 - acre site on the outskirts of White Town, a charming area known for its French colonial - era villas lining its leafy streets, eateries from quirky cafes to upscale courtyard restaurants serve French, Indian, and Franco - Tamil cuisine, crafts shops, dot cobbled lanes, and also highlighted by the presence of iconic religious sites include the Sri Aurobindo Ashram meditation centre and the ornate Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple.
The hotel will feature 180 comfortable rooms and offer views of the Bay of Bengal, an all - day dining restaurant, two specialty restaurants, a bar, a lounge, a gym, swimming pool, the J Wellness Circle, providing spa therapies, and recreational facilities.
Taj Pondicherry will also provide extensive banqueting spaces, including a 10.700 square - foot indoor banquet hall and beachfront lawns for outdoor events.
The property will join the emblematic Taj brand characterized by its deep Indian heritage and authentic cultural experience, world – class service and a strong commitment to sustainability.
The brand also focuses on preserving Indian culinary traditions and craftmanship, maintaining an iconic luxury image, and expanding its global presence highlighting responsible tourism.
