The Egyptian Government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), a UN agency that helps the countries eliminate poverty, achieve sustainable economic growth, and improve human development, signed an action plan for a project the resilience of urban areas to climate risks to implement in the governorate of Damietta, located in the north of the country, near the Nile Delta that has been selected as a pilot area as reported by Sada El - Balad, news website and satellite television channel headquartered in Giza.
Damietta Governorate is a strategic Mediterranean hub where the Nile meets the sea, making it vital for agriculture and trade, known for its booming furniture industry, seafood, Domiati cheese and the historic port resort town of Ras El Bar, a land which combines rich history with modern urban developments like New Damietta, a centre established in 1980 by the New Urban Communities Authority.
The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Local Development in the New Administrative Capital. The document was signed by UNDP’s Permanent Representative to Egypt, Chitose Noguchi, and Assistant of Minister of Local Development for National Projects, Hisham al - , Helbawi.
This initiative has the main objective to protect Damietta's centres from climate change impacts like sea - level rise, coastal erosion, abnormal heat waves, and flooding. It will serve as a model for other vulnerable centres in the Nile Delta and potentially other East African countries that will receive modern risks forecasting systems, learn how to manage them and be able to act quickly in emergency situations.
The project, which is part of Egypt’s “Sustainable Egyptian Cities Initiative” program focuses on several key areas:
• Improving Information Systems: The project will enhance data and information systems regarding climate risks to ensure better risks forecasting.
• Enhancing Urban Planning: It will support risk – informed urban planning and governance to build resilience in vulnerable communities.
• Strengthening Preparedness: The initiative aims to improve emergency response capacities and disaster preparedness planning.
• Empowering Communities: The project will work with local communities to manage climate – related risks and disaster effectively.
• Knowledge Sharing: Solutions developed in the Governorate of Damietta will be shared with other high – risk governorates in Egypt, as well as with neighbouring countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda.
The work will be carried out in coordination with other government programs in Egypt, with a plan include the creation of an early warning system for climate disasters and a new water resources management policy.
