India | Achieved an All - Time High in Renewable Energy Expansion in 2025

India achieved an all - time high in renewable energy expansion in 2025, adding a record capacity of approximately 44.5 GW of renewable energy up to November 2025. This marks nearly a doubling of the capacity added in the previous year when the country in the same period recorded 24.72 GW according to the Indian Government, figures replicated by Indo - Asian News Service (IANS), a private Indian news agency based in New Delhi.

The total installed capacity of renewables reached 253.96 GW in November 2025, representing a growth of more than 23% year - on - year.

Installed solar capacity of renewables surpassed 100 GW in January 2025
and reached 132.85 GW in November, an increase of more than 41% from 2024.

These advances align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision presented at COP - 26, the 26th United Nations Climate Change conference, held in Glasgow, Scotland, UK, which sets a goal of reaching 500 GW of non - fossil energy capacity by 2030.

In June 2025, India achieved 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non - fossil sources, five years ahead of its commitment to the Paris Agreement.

India’s Key Achievements in 2025

•    Record Capacity Addition: India added 44.51 GW of renewable energy capacity by November 2025, a significant increase from 24.72 GW in the same period of 2024.
•    Target Achieved Early: In June 2025, India reached its goal of having 50% of its total electric power capacity from non - fossil fuels, five years ahead of its 2030 Paris Agreement target.
•    Total Non - Fossil Capacity: By November 2025, the total installed capacity from non – fossil fuel sources, including large hydro and nuclear power, was 262.74 GW, accounting for 51.5% of the country’s total electricity capacity.
•    Solar and Wind Growth: Solar energy contributed 34.98 GW, bringing the total to 132.85 GW, while wind energy added 5.82 GW, reaching a total of 53.99 GW. Solar capacity surpassed 100 GW in January 2025, and wind capacity exceeded 50 GW in March 2025.
•    Single - Day Generation Record: On July 29, 2025, renewable spplies 51.5% of India’s daily electricity demand, setting a record for the highest share of renewable energy in a single day.
•    Global Ranking: According to IRENA RE Statistics 2025, India is ranked third globally in installed solar power capacity, fourth in wind power capacity, and fourth in total renewable energy capacity.

India’s renewable energy success is marked by rapidly growing capacity, achieving over 50% non - fossil fuel electricity generation capacity ahead of its 2030 goal, becoming a global leader in solar deployment with massive parks and rooftop systems, attracting significant investment, and driving energy security through initiatives like local manufacturing (PLI) and biofuel blending, despite challenges like solar waste management.
