Mille - Logya, Ethiopia | A Research Team Discovered 2.6-million-Year - Old Hominin Fossil Remains

A research team has discovered 2.6 million - year - old million old hominin fossil remains in Mille - Logya paleoanthropological site located in the lower Awash River Valley, in  northeastern Ethiopia’s Afar region, marking the first evidence of the genus Paranthropus in this territory,  according to Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a major, state affiliated media holding based in Addis Ababa.

This discovery is changing understanding of early human evolution in Africa and fills a long - standing gap in the regional fossil record,, providing new data and showing that this group of early hominins were more widespread that previous information relased by studies.

Although species of the genera Ardipithecus, Australopithecus and Homo had already been identified in the Afar region, before this discovery no remains of Paranthropus had been found.

According to the researchers, the previous absence of this genus had led to the belief that is never inhabited the region, an assumption that new discovery casts doubt.

The Discovery's Site:

The Mille -  Logya Project (MLP) developed on a significant paleonanthropological site spanning roughly 2.9 to 2.4 million years ago filling a crucial gap in the Plio - Pleistocene record, that documents critical early human evolution and fauna changes. Excavations led by Dr. Zeresenay Alemseged since 2014 have yielded fossils indicating environmental shifts to open habitats, and this 2.6 million - year - old partial jaw’s discovery, confirmed the presence of Paranthropus in the region, challenging previous assumption about its restricted distribution.

 The Afar Depressions

The Afar Depressions also known as Afar Triangle where The Mille - Logya site lies, is a geologically, active, low - lying region in the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia)  representing one of the most significant paleoanthropological sites in the world, often referred to as a “cradle” of human evolution due to its extensive, continuous record of hominin fossils spanning million of years. Located at the junction of three continental plates, the region’s unique geological activity has preserved thousands of fossils, including many of the earliest known human ancestors.

Deputy Director – General of the Ethiopian Heritage Authority Elias Shikur said the find reinforces the country’s position as the “Cradle of Humanity” and highlighted the role of international scientific cooperation. He also noted that these discoveries can attract greater international attention and contribute to the development of research and cultural tourism in Ethiopia.
