Paulínia, Brazil | Major Project to Develop the Largest Biomethane Production Plant in the Country Launched

Brazil has launched a major project to develop its largest biomethane production plant in  Paulínia, a Brazilian municipality in the interior of the state of São Paulo, located near Campinas in the northwest of the São Paulo Macrometropolis, a lively centre known for its economic development, cultural attractions such as its Municipal Theatre, extensive parks like Bloemen Park and Van Gogh Park, a significant oil refinery (REPLAN), and its friendly atmosphere, offering a mix of nature, city life, and activities for tourists and residents.

Brazil’s National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) has approved an estimated 450 million reais (about US$90 million) in financing for the installation of a biomethane biogas production plant, a project aimed at transforming urban waste into renewable gas.

This initiative represents a significant advance in the country’s energy transition and in the expansion of clean sources within the Brazilian energy matrix, according to information released by the Brazilian news portal, Brasil 247. With this move Brazil reinforces the role of biomethane as a strategic solution for the decarbonisation and sustainable use of urban waste.

The plant, considered the largest of its kind in Brazil, will have the capacity to produce 225.000 cubic metres per day of biomethane from municipal solid waste.

The project will prevent the emission of more than 100.000 tonnes of CO₂ per year, contributing directly to the mitigation of climate change.

During its construction, it is expected to generate around 3.000 direct and indirect jops, in addition to a positive impact on regional development.
