Bangkok, Thailand | Launched an Electric Motorcycle Taxis Project for a Cleaner and more Efficient Urban Transport in the City

Bangkok, Thailand capital and largest city is advancing cleaner, more efficient urban transport by piloting electric motorcycle taxis (e – motos) to reduce emissions and pollution.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration launched the “Electric Motorcycles for Drivers” project with the aim of accelerating the transition of motorcycles taxis to electric vehicles in the city through a pilot rental and test model, aimed at reducing pollution and operating costs according to Vietnam News Agency.

The initiative is implemented by King Mongkut University of Technology in Thonburi in collaboration with  the Electric Vehicle Association of Thailand.

The program plans to test a leasing system with affordable daily rates and install charging infrastructure, with a first phase that will involve over 200 municipal riders and workers.

The initiative features swappable battery platforms in Din Daeng and Phaya Thai districts, while 30 selected participants will use electric motorcycles in real - world conditions for one at no cost.

The project has the purpose to cut emissions by 0.7 tons of CO2  per bike annually, and the data obtained will allow the possible expansion to the entire city.

According to mobility and climate studies, Bangkok has more than 89.000 motorcycle taxi drivers, whose gasoline - based system generates between 80.000 and 100.000 tons of carbon dioxide per year, in addition to contributing significantly to PM2.5 particle pollution.

This push for e - motos aligns with borader efforts to modernize Bangkok’s transportation system, which is currently heavily reliant on conventional, polluting vehicles, and supports Thailand’s overall goal for 30% of manufactured vehicles to be electric by 2030.

Governor Chadchart Sittipunt stressed that motorcycles taxis are essential part of the urban transport system and that their electrification will help reduce carbon emissions, reduce fuel expenditure and improve the economic stability of drivers.
