The Dominican Republic’s Government decided will invest $12 million to install a new cable car in Puerto Plata, a renowned destination known as the "Port of Silver", located on the Dominican Republic's northern Amber Coast. featuring a blend of unique colonial history, Victorian architecture, natural attractions and stunning beaches.
The iconic Puerto Plata cable car (teleférico) to Mount Isabel de Torres has been closed since June 2024 for a complete overhaul due to structural deterioration and safety concerns and there plans to replace the 50 - year old system with a modern one.
The general director of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC), Igor Rodríguez, reported that by order of President Luis Abinader, the institution will contribute $6 million, while the Ministry of Tourism (Mitur) will contribute another $6 million, for a total of $12 million, for the installation of the new Puerto Plata Cable Car.
IDAC’s Director explained that the work has not stopped, since in July 2025, the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, led a meeting with members of the Federation of Workers and Vendors and Allied of the Northern Zone (Federnorte) where they talked about the importance of this work for the destination.
The General Director of Civil Aviation stressed that the institution, in its capacity as a member of the Tourism Cabinet, participates so that this emblematic attraction return to operate and continues to strengthen the tourism and economic development of the province.
With this relevant investment, the Government reaffirms its commitment to the recovery and modernization of Puerto Plata’s tourism infrastructure, consolidating its position as one of the country’s main destinations.
In the same order the Minister of Tourism David Collado explained that a delegation from the Colombian mobility company Transmilenio was carrying out technical inspection in the Puerto Plata cable car, with the aim to establish a final plan to determine where its renovation should begin.
The Minister said that the result that comes out of Transmilenio company is what the Dominican Republic is going to do for the cable car, this is free of charge and it was achieved diplomatically. The cable car sellers travelled to Colombia and now the Transmilenio technicians are there in Puerto Plata for this project.
