Tunis, Tunisia's capital and largest city has plans to expand Tunis - Carthage International Airport (TUN), the primary hub for the country, at an estimate cost of about $1 billion (3 billion dinars), aiming to annual capacity from around 5 million to 18.5 million passengers by 2031 as revealed the Transport Ministry on 8 March 2026
Key features of this expansion development to quadruple capacity includes the construction of a new terminal building to handle increased traffic, and a dedicated metro link directly connecting the airport to the city centre.
The project also includes protection aviation policies to support the national carrier Tunisair and has been included in the Civil Aviation and Airports Authority’s 2026 investment budget and replaces, for now, earlier plans to build a new airport.
The upgrade is intended to modernise air transport infrastructure, ease congestion and strengthen connectivity, supporting tourism growth and wider market access in North Africa.
