According to ENA, the official news agency of the government, this renewable energy project that adds 100 megawatts to the the country’s national power grid seeks to ensure a reliable electricity supply and foster economic growth.
Key details regarding the project:
• Capacity and Output: The wind farm features 29 Siemens Gamesa turbines, designed to generate over 300 GWh of clean energy annually, enough to power more than 140.000 households.
• Financing and Constructions: The project was fully financed by Denamark through a grant from Danida Sustainable Infrastructure Finance (DSIF) ahnd a loan from Danske Bank. The turnkey construction was handled by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy with its global headquarters located in Zamudio, Spain.
• Project Siginificance: The Assela project acts as the fifth major wind farm in Ethiopia, increasing the country’s total wind capacity to roughly 504 MW. It is a key part of the “Team Europe” approach under the EU’s Global Gateway strategy and helps diversify Ethiopia’s energy grid, which is heavily reliant on hydro power.
The Assela wind farm is expected to play a significant role in strengthening Ethiopia’s renewable energy capacity and supporting its long - term development agenda.
This project follows the first phase of the “Aysha II” wind farm that was inaugurated in the east of the country, a project implemented with the help of a Chinese company, which was launched in 2017 that has a total capacity of 120 MW and will have 48 wind turbine with 32 already in operation.
