South Luangwa National Park, Zambia | BBC Wildlife Documentary “Kingdom” Placed the Park on the Global Tourism Map

South Luangwa National Park located in east Zambia’s Luangwa River valley, a world - renowned wildlife sanctuary situated along the Luangwa River, famous as the home of the walking safari, featuring dense game concentrations, including large herds of elephant, Thonicroft’s giraffe, buffalo, high density of leopards, and over 400 bird species, particularly during the May –-October dry season, was highlighted by a unique BBC wildlife documentary placing it on the global tourism map. 

The documentary was mainly focused on  the Nsefu sector , a renowned area in the northern part of Luangwa National Park, known as the first photographic safari zone in Zambia, famed for diverse habitats, featuring foodplains, lagoons, and crossed by the Luangwa River, providing a secluded, high - quality safari experience.

With “ Kingdom” a wildlife  documentary series produced by BBC Studios Natural History Unit, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, and filmed over five years, the longest period the BBC  Natural History Unit has spent filming in a single location for one series, the documentary captures iconic species, showcasing rival lion, leopard, hyena, and wild dog families in a “Shakesperean” drama,  highlighting the intense survival struggles in this rich, untamed African ecosystem. 

The documentary aligns with Zambia’s broader economic strategy under the Eight National Development Plan, which identifies tourism as a key driver of diversification, job creation, and foreign exchange earnings. 

More than 90 Zambians participated in the production as rangers, conservationists, guides, and technical crew, reflecting the government’s focus on inclusive growth within the sector. 

Key Aspects of BBC’s South Luangwa Coverage

•    Location: The Nesfu sector, a 226 km² area within South Luangwa, known for its dense predator populatations, riverine forests and floodplains. 
•    Production: Produced by BBC Studios Natural History Unit, this project spent an unusual five years in one location to capture in depth, long – term narratives of specific animal families. 
•    The “Kingdom” Focus: The series covers four main predator families struggling for power, including lions, leopards, wild dogs, and hyenas. 
•    Environment: The series depicts the extreme, harsh climate of the dry season (April to November) with temperature reaching up to 50°C, resulting in scarce water and intense competition for survival. 
•    Conservation and Conflict: The series highlights the challenges of living alongside wildlife, featuring the work of he Zambian Carnivore Programme and the realities of human – elephant conflict. 

Speaking at the screening, hosted by the British High Commission, Minister orf Tourism Rodney Sikumba described the production as a significant milestone in showcasing Zambia’s natural heritage  to a global audience and strengthening the country’s eco - tourism profile.  

British High Commissioner Rebecca Terzeon commended the Zambia - UK collaboration, describing Kingdom as a powerful showcase of the country’s extraordinary natural heritage. 

With Kingdom documentary enhancing Zambia’s visibility in the global landscape, the government has also implemented visa liberalisation, improved air connectivity, and targeted international marketing as part of its wider effort to position the country as a premier global destination.
