Abu Dhabi, the vibrant capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), located off the mainland on an island in the Arabian Gulf, a centre with a strong focus on oil exports, finance, services and commerce, highlighted by the skyline’s modern towers and shopping megacentres, has launched an ambitious roadmap to strengthen sustainability and move toward clean energy, targeting a 75% cut in emissions from the power sector by 2035.
The strategy prioritises the transition to cleaner energy and robust resource management to align with the UAE’s broader climate neutrality goals.
According to Abu Dhabi’s Department of Energy Chairman Abdullah Humaid Al Jarwan the emirate has made significant progress in reducing its carbon footprint, recording a total decrease in carbon dioxide emissions of 42.5 million metric tons compared to 2016 levels.
The official stressed that environmental sustainability is an essential pillar in the process of integral development of the city and emirate and in the construction of an efficient and resilient economy.
Abu Dhabi is making progress in implementing ambitious plans aimed at raising the share of electricity produced from renewable and clean sources to 60% by 2035, in addition to reducing emissions intensity by 75%, according to Emirates News Agency (VAM).
In this context the “Abu Dhabi Strategy for Demand Management and Energy Rationalization 2030” reflects the city’s commitment to strengthening resource efficiency and the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has laid out a comprehensive framework built on aggressive targets for the next decade.
Core Targets and Initiatives:
• Clean Energy Transition: The city and emirate aims to generate 60% of its total electricity from clean and renewable energy sources, including solar and nuclear by 2035.
• Energy & Water Efficiency (DSM 2030): The Abu Dhabi Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy seeks to reduce electricity consumption by 22% and water consumption by 22% by 2030.
• Emissions Reductions: Abu Dhabi is actively executing its Climate Change Strategy to drastically cut emissions intensity per megawatt – hour.
The Role of Advanced Technology in the Abu Dhabi Ambitious Roadmap:
• AI Integration: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a major pillar in optimising power generation, managing clean energy flows, and improving operational resilience.
• Infrastructure Investment: Alongside solar developments such as massive solar PV projects, the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) is focused on modernising grid frameworks and promoting smart energy self – supply.
Abu Dhabi’s Department of Energy Chairman Abdullah Humaid Al Jarwan underlined the strategic role of innovation, stating that the integration of artificial intelligence, robotics and digital systems technologies contributes to increasing operational efficiency and enables accurate decisions to ensure infrastructure readiness for environmental and economic changes.
The heads of the department also noted that the diversification of the energy matrix, through the expansion of solar energy projects and investment in nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, consolidates the UAE’s regional leadership in the transition to low - carbon power.
The department reaffirmed its commitment to support the “Emirates Energy Strategy 2050” by formalising regulatory policies that strengthen energy security and ensure the continuity of essential services with high reliability.
The entity also stressed the importance of international coordination and intensifying joint efforts to reduce emissions and limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, in order to build a more sustainable and resilient future in the face of climate change.
