Azua, The Dominican Republic | Planned a Massive Redevelopment of Playa Monte Río to Boost Tourism in the Southern Region

The Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism has planned a massive redevelopment of Playa Monte Río, a renowned beach in Azua de Compostela, also known simply as Azua, a city, municipality and capital of Azua Province in the southern region of Dominican Republic, located 87 km west of the national capital, Santo Domingo, a city valley surrounded by the Cordillera Central mountains facing a wide ocean bay. Founded in 1504, Azua is one of the oldest European settlements in the Americas, the city is renowned for its rich colonial history, pristine nearby beaches, tropical rainforests, desert landscapes, and a strong agricultural economy. 

Playa Monte Río is a scenic, 400 - metre - long  beach known for its striking dark volcanic - style sand, the beach is framed by beautiful mountainous terrain that runs  right up to the coastline, featuring a very gradual, slight increase in depth, and generally calm, low ties, making it safe and highly suitable for children and the elderly, it serves as a popular, easily accessible coastal escape, highlighted  by,a family - friendly atmosphere.

Backed by a RD$265 million investment the Tourism Minister David Collado inaugurated the construction of new service infrastructure at this beach, a project designed to bring a premium, organized aesthetic in one of the region’s most emblematic public beaches, and  aimed to elevate Playa Monte Río into a world - class destination, improving visitor amenities, and boosting tourism in the southern region.  

The intervention will cover approximately 46.200 metres of total structural and architectural renovation, and includes road rehabilitation, paved streets, parking areas, side walks, retaining walls, and embankment works.

The project also features new modules for restaurants and local vendors, an outdoor gym, public restrooms and showers, children playground, a scenic metal viewing deck, and new security checkpoints for municipal police, Politur and the Navy.

In addition, the development includes upgrades to water, sanitation, drainage, and electrical systems, along with comprehensive lighting improvements.

A landscaping and environmental restoration plan will also be implemented, complemented by the installation of wooden walkways, signage, waste disposal stations, and urban furniture. 

The Minister of Tourism described the project as a long - awaited development that will help transform Azua Into a stronger tourism destination and drive economic growth in the southern region of the country.
