Forest Rangers discovered an unexplored, pristine cave with multicoloured stalactite formations in Bac Huong Hoa Nature Reserve in Quang Tri Province, where the majestic Annamite also known as Truong Son Range stretches all the way to the Vietnam - Laos border.
The reserve that covers more than 23.000 hectares , renowned for its rich biodiversity. regarded as the “green bank” of Central Vietnam, is home of nearly 920 species of higher plants, including 27 listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book. The reserve boasts a vast evergreen tropical rainforest which forms a lush canopy, layered with unique ecosystems, hosting in its territory 42 species of mammals, 171 species of birds, and more than 30 species of reptiles and amphibians, many of them rare and endangered.
According to the Nam Quang Tri Special Use Forest Management Council and reported by Vietnam News Agency (VNA) , the remote cave was found during a routine Ranger’s patrol in Subzone 638S observing the presence of numerous virgin stalactites of various shapes and colours.
The cave features a nearly 70 - metres - wide entrance and extends 200 metres before splitting into four massive branches filled with stalactite formations.
Because the team lacked specialized caving gear, they could not map the entire underground system, though the presence of an underground stream indicates it extends much further into the Annamite mountain range.
The newly discovered cave is located near a large sinkhole and in the vicinity of Van Tien Cave, where an impressive stalactite system was identified more than a decade ago. Authorities believe that the area could be part of an extensive interconnected network of karst caves.
Authorities plan to coordinate with expert geologists and caving groups to fully survey the area for future conservation and potential adventure tourism.
