Brazil | Domestic Aviation Sector Hit an All - Time High in the First Five Months of 2026 with 42 million Boardings

Brazil’s domestic aviation sector hit an all - time high by moving 42 million passengers on domestic flights in the first five months of 2026 according to data compiled by the Ministry of Tourism and released by the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC).

The Brazilian Ministry of Tourism attributes this record - breaking volume of domestic boarding, the highest on record since at least the year 2000, to improved regional air connectivity and strategic policies encouraging travel.

This outstanding result represents a 6% increase from the 39.8 million passengers recorded during the same period in 2025 as reported by Agência Brasil, a nationwide public news agency headquartered in Brasilia and run by the Brazilian government.

This is the first time that the country has surpassed the 42 million passenger mark in the period. The month of May recorded 8.31 million passengers, up 2% from 8.18 million in May 2025. These figures also represent highest historical records, both in the annual cumulative and in the month of May, according to ANAC.

As additional information provided by the National Civil Aviation Agency, the movement of international tourists increased by 5%, from 2.13 million to 2.23 million, figures that also represent a historical record.

In the international arena, the cumulative figure for the year also showed growth: 12.8 million passengers in the first five months, 10% more than the 11.6 million in 2025.

Major routes, particularly those between São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Bahia, continue to dominate the nation’s interstate passenger flow.

The Minister of Tourism, Gustavo Feliciano, attributed the results to the excellent moment of the sector and stressed that they reflect greater confidence, income and desire of Brazilians to know the beauties of their own country.

The official said that each full plane means busy hotels, restaurants operating at full capacity, dynamic local commerce and, most importantly, generation of employment and income throughout the territory, from the large capitals to the small tourist municipalities.

The Minister added that the records are the result of a serious work to structure destinations, promote national routes and strategic alliances to make travel more accessible.
