Indonesia | Targeting China’s High Outbound Travel Demand, Establishing New Direct Air Routes to Expand its Tourism Sector

Indonesia is aggressively expanding its tourism sector by establishing  new direct air routes from key Chinese cities to major Indonesian hubs. By targeting China’s high outbound travel demand, the Southeast country aims to welcome more Chinese visitors in popular destinations like Bali, but also in Manado, and Jakarta,  aiming with a planned strategy to diversify its destinations.

According to Antara, a news agency that delivers real time information on various events from Indonesia and around the world, Indonesia hopes to increase the arrival of Chinese tourists after the opening of two new direct air routes connecting the capital of the country Jakarta with the cities of Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, two of China’s main economic centres and boasting airports with a high traffic. 

New Flight Connections and Carriers

•    Spring Airlines Routes: The Chinese low - cost carrier launched budget flights from Guangzhou and Shenzhen to Jakarta’s Soekarno - Hatta International Airport. 
•    TransNusa’s Regional Hub: TransNusa introduced routes connecting Shenzhen to Manado, utilizing Chinese – developed aircraft to tap into the Southeast Asian travel market. 
•    Flagship Expansion: Garuda Indonesia continues to hold a major market share in Indonesia – China flights, heavily prioritizing connection points in Bali.

 The move comes amid sustained recovery in tourism from China. According to official data, Indonesia received 491.726 Chinese visitors in Q1 2026, 25.58% more than in the same period last year. 

Tourism officials said the new connections are in response to the growing interest of Chinese travellers in visiting Indonesia. The inaugural flights, which took place recently registered high occupancy levels, reflecting the strong demand between the two markets.

 The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism also hopes that improved air connectivity will not only boost visits to Jakarta, but also encourage tourists to explore other destinations in the archipelago. 

China is currently one of the main source markets for tourists for Indonesia fuelling the tourism sector that the government considers key to boosting local economies and promoting national economic growth
