Peru | Firmly Solidified its Position as a Premier Global Surfing Destination after Being Chosen to Host the ISA World Surfing Games 2026

Peru has firmly solidified its position as a premier global surfing destination after being chosen to host the prestigious International Surfing Association (ISA) World Surfing Games, one of the most important international surfing competitions as reported with satisfaction by the Peruvian Commission for Exports and Tourism (PROMPERÚ).

This designation reaffirms Peru prominence within the global surfing community hosting this championship that will take place from November 6 to 15, 2026 at the renowned Punta Rocas beach, a legendary point - break beach located in Punta Negra, approximately 40 kilometres  south of the capital of the country.

This beach is known as the “cathedral” of Peruvian surfing, characteruized by the consistent powerful right - hand - left reef break, offering thick tubular sections that can peel for hundreds of metres is capable of holding massive swells.

On this Peruvian beach famed surfers from different countries will meet to compete in a tournament that will begin the qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The competition will award highly coveted team qualification slots, further cementing Peru’s strategic importance in the global surfing hierarchy.

Peru is not only a host for modern global contests; many historians believe the country is the actual birthplace of surfing. For over 3.000 years, fishermen in the coastal town of Huanchaco have been riding waves using traditional reed watercraft known as “Caballitos de totora”.

According to the Study of the Potential of Surf Tourism in Peru 2024 prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR), 30.7% of international visitors who arrive at Peruvian beaches do so mainly motivated by surfing.

In addition tourists who visit surfing destinations in the north of the country, such as Piura and La Libertad, register an average stay of nine nights and an average expenditure of more than $2.400 per trip, generating a relevant economic impact for local economies.

Peru boasts over 3.000 kilometres of coastline and is home to an abundance of world - class, uncovered breaks suitable for all skills surfing level.

Peruvian beaches are widely recognized among the international community. Among the most visited are Lobitos and Máncora in Piura; Chicama and Huanchaco in La Libertad,; as well as Punta Hermosa and Punta Rocas, in the area of Lima.
