China launched its 16th Arctic expedition on July, 3, 2026 marking the first time the country has sent four research vessels at once to study global climate change and its impacts, conducting comprehensive monitoring in key areas of the Arctic Ocean in disciplines such as sea ice, hydrology, biology, ecology, atmosphere with deep studies on marine ecosystems, and the deep - sea environment.
With the departure of the oceanographic vessels Xuelong, Xuelong 2 and Jidi from the port of Dalian, a modern city on the Liaodong Peninsula, at the southern n tip of China’s Liaoning Province, the mission is set to run until early October 2026 and marks a milestone in Chinese polar research by deploying three
scientific icebreakers jointly in the Arctic region for the first time.
The expedition organised by the Ministry of Natural Resources will be also supported by the Tansuo - 3 ship.
Apart the environment studies, the mission will also address international frontier issues, such as the accretion mechanism of the Gekkel Ridge and the dynamic evolution of the oceanic crust, and foresees collaborations with scientists from Germany and Russia.
Team Leader Wang Jinhui noted that the Arctic is undergoing rapid transformations due to global warming, with accelerated ice melting affecting all of humanity, This research seeks to provide scientific evidence to understand these phenomena and promote sustainable development in the polar region.
With this expedition, China thus reaffirms its commitment to international cooperation to understand, protect and govern the Arctic, offering scientific support to both the global community and the own polar research strategies, in a context of growing geopolitical and climate interest in the region.
