Nigeria | United Nigeria Airlines Admitted as a Full Member of the African Airlines Association

United Nigeria Airlines has been admitted as a full member of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA), a premier trade organization representing over 45 airlines across Africa, connecting carriers that operates more than 85% of the continent’s international passenger traffic with its main features focus on flight safety, lowering costs through resources, data analytics and industry collaboration.

The entry marks a significant step in the five - year old carrier’s bid to expand beyond its 14 - route domestic network and establishes a stronger foothold in African and intercontinental aviation.

United Nigeria Airlines launched in February 2021 is a growing carrier headquartered in the city of Enugu with Akanu Iniam Internaional Airport serves as the primary base of its operations.

With sn expanding fleet of 12+aircraft, the carrier operates a mixed fleet of Boeing 737 - 800NG, Airbus A2330, Embraer 190 and CRJ 900 aircraft, it has been already designated by the Nigerian Federal Government to operate intercontinental routes to Canada, Italy,Turkey,  the UAE, the United Kingdom,  UK, and the United States.

The airline features a premium Business Class, exclusive airport lounge access, in flight - catering offering Nigerian delicacies and Unity Rewards loyalty program. 

AFRAA membership, which gives access to joint negotiations on fuel, ground handling and insurance, positions the carrier within a bloc that collectively over 85% of Africa’s international passenger traffic increasing the visibility and reinforcing the competitiveness of United Nigerian Airlines in the regional and international landscape.

The airline has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Guinea- Bissau to assist in establishing a national carrier, and has advanced plans to develop a local Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility in Nigeria, a development that could significantly reduce the costs currently incurred by Nigerian carriers through offshore maintenance.

The carrier already holds IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification and maintains membership in the IATA Clearing House - prerequisites agreements and international credibility.

The African Airlines Association’s Secretary General Abderahmane Berthé described Nigeria as exemplifying the resilient, forward - looking spirit of the African airline industry.

United Nigeria Airlines Executive Chairman Prof. Obiora Okonkwo cited the membership as a platform to advance the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) and deepen intra - African connectivity
