Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially inaugurated the renovated airport of Debre Markos, a city, separate woreda, and administrative seat of the East Gojjam Zone in Amhara region, Ethiopia, located roughly 300 km northwest of Addis Ababa, home to the highly regarded Debre Markos University, it serves as a relevant regional agricultural hub and a gateway to the spectacular Choke Mountains, which boast diverse ecosystems ranging from tropical to alpine.
The rehabilitation project returned this infrastructure to operation after almost three decades of inactivity, according to information from Fana Media Corporation (FMC), a leading Ethiopian media organization formed through the merger of the former Fana Broadcasting Corporate S.C. and Walta Media.
King Tekle Hasymanot Airport, which remained out of service for approximately 30 years, has been modernized and rebuilt to meet current aviation standards, thus responding to a long-standing aspiration of local communities.
The upgraded facility aims to significantly boost regional trade, investment, and tourism. A new runway 2.400 metres long and 30 metres wide was developed, capable of accommodating aircraft like the Boeing 737 and Bombarder Q400, as well as the operation of other large aircraft, both passenger and cargo.
Commercial flights are being restored with services offered by Ethiopian Airlines. The revival serves as a major driver for the local economy, cutting down what was previously a tedious seven - hour journey from the capital Addis Ababa.
Regional leadership anticipates that improved logistics and transport integration will unlock the area’s agricultural, mineral, and tourist potential.
According to the Prime Minister, the reopening
of the airport will significantly boost trade, investment and tourism in the
region, marking the beginning of a new stage of economic growth for Debre
Markos and the country as a whole.
The official also stressed that the ability to transform challenges into
opportunities remains the central axis of government efforts to expand
infrastructure and generate tangible benefits for communities.
