Egypt | Actively Expanding its Universities Globally to Strengthen its International Academic Presence

Egypt is actively expanding its universities globally to strengthen its international academic presence, acting as a key strategy to boost soft power and create a knowledge - based economy under its 2030 vision.

Major initiatives include opening international branches of public universities in Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and in the UAE, along with increasing dual - degree programs.

According to Sada - El Balad,  a news website and satellite television channel headquartered in Giza, the North African country is stepping its efforts to prioritize the global presence of its higher education sector, placing the internationalization of universities and the establishments of overseas venues at the centre of its national strategy.

The move comes against a backdrop of growing global demand for affordable, high - quality education, an area in which Egypt is seeking to position itself competitively.

Officials increasingly see education not only as a public service, but also as a strategic tool of soft power and international influence.

The strategy includes expanding  joint academic programs with top - tier international universities, introducing franchise courses through academic partnerships, and modernizing curricula to meet global standards.

According to experts, these measures seeks to facilitate international expansion by guaranteeing competitiveness and quality.

The deployment will be carried out in phases. The first phase will focus on strengthening Egypt’s presence in existing partner regions, particularly in Africa and the Arab world.

Universities are also excpected to increase the number of programs offered in English and French languages to attract a greater number of international students.

In the second phase, the focus will be on emerging markets, such as Central Asia and Southeast Asia, where demand for higher education is growing rapidly. This stage is expected to open up new opportunities for academic - cooperation and institutional partnerships.

The third phase contemplates a more selective entry into specific markets, focusing on specialized areas, such as health education. It is hoped that the existing international experiences of Egyptian universities will serve as a model for future expansions.

Officials believe that this model will support sustainable growth, improve operational efficiency, and ensure the long - term viability of the international expansion of higher education in Egypt.

Minister of Higher Education and Scientific - Research Abdelaziz Konsowa stated that the initiative aims to strengthen Egypt’s position in higher education, both regionally and internationally, while supporting the transition to a knowledge - based economy.

According toi the Minister, leading Egyptian universities will be encouraged to open overseas campuses as part of a broader plan to export educational services and consolidate a sustainable academic presence in key international markets.
