Number of tourists grows in Panama thanks to Copa Airlines’s Panama Stopover Program during the first half of 2026, an initiative which allows passengers to make a stopover in the country at no additional in the airfare.
With the implementation of the program the country registered a growth of 38% compared to the same period in 2025, according to an official statement. More than 132.000 visitors stayed in Panama in the first six months of this year as the Panamanian airline reported on 10 July, 2026.
Copa Airlines said that visitors took advantage of their stay to tour the Panama Canal, shop, enjoy local cuisine and visit beaches, natural areas, as well as sites of cultural interest.
The program has a network of more than 80 allied businesses including hotels, restaurants and tour operators, and aspires to exceed the goal of 250.000 visitors by the end of 2026.
Among the novelties implemented this year in the extension from seven to 15 days of the period of permanence allowed at no additional cost, as well as the opening of the “Sal a Panama” space at the Tocumen International Airport, which since the end of May received more than 80.000 visitors.

The Executive President of the flag carrier, Pedro Heilbron, stressed that the program takes advantage of the connectivity of the Hub of the Americas to turn Panama into a tourist destination and not just a transit point.
The Administrator of the Panama Tourism Authority, Gloria De León, said that the growth of the program confirms its contribution to the sector, by generating greater income for hotels, restaurants, tour operators and businesses.
