South Africa | Tops the African Continent’s Aviation Rankings with 575 Airports

South Africa tops the African continent’s avation rankings with 575 airports, making the only country in Africa to feature in the global top 15, according to World Population Review’s 2026 rankings.

The rankings count all airports and airfields recognisable from the air, including paved and unpaved, active and abandoned facilities.

South Africa’s network ranges from large gateways to small rural dirt strips. It handles massive tourism and mining traffic across remote areas where driving is difficult.

Airports like O.R. Tambo and Cape Town International consistently voted the best airport in Africa for its cleanliness, fast lines, and helpful staff lead the way. They boast long runways for large jets, premium airline lounges, extensive duty – free shopping, and fast train links.

Small airports like Shukuza Airport are carved directly into national parks. They feature open - air, thatched - roof terminals that lock like luxury safari lodges. Smaller facilities such as Lanseria International Airport outside Johannesburg bypass the busy crowds. They offer quick, quiet, and easy travel with mostly domestic flights.

In the established ranking Kenya follows in second place with 370 airports, ranking 19th globally, Democratic Republic of Congo places third with 272, Namibia ranks fourth with 255 airports, placing 26th globally ahead of Tanzania (206), Zimbabwe (144), Botswana (122), Zambia (119) , Angola (116), and Mozambique (92).

The ranking highlights that Africa’s airport infrastructure is driven less by populations size and more by geographic necessirty.

Countries such as Botswana, Namibia, and Zambia feature prominently due to their large territories, remote communities, wildlife tourism industries, and mining operations that depend on air access where road infrastructure is limited or absent.

Tanzania’s network supports one of Africa’s busiest wildlife sectors, with bush airstrips serving the Serengeti and Selous, while Botswana’s 122 airports are closely tied to its high - end safari economy in the Okavango Delta and Kalahari.

Mozambique 92 airports reflect the logisticals demands of a coastline stretching over 2.500 kilometres alongside underdeveloped interior road networks.
