Australia | Digitising Arrival Cards at its Airports

Australia is replacing traditional paper incoming passenger cards with the Australia Travel Declaration (ATD). The Australian government announced on 13 July this initiative with the introduction of of a modernised process system for all international passengers within 13 months.

The move, supported by an investment of AS56.1 million, equivalent to about US$39 million, seeks to modernise border processes and speed up transit at airports eliminating paperwork and speed up border processing.

Passengers complete the form online up to 72 hours before their flight and scan a digital QR code upon arrival that remains accessible and scannable by border officers even if your phone is offline or has no internet. Presenting your QR code to Australian Border Force officer signuficantly reduces wait times and eliminates the need to carry a pen on the plane.

The digital system is undergoing a phased nationwide rollout across all Australian international airports and seaports.

Following a successful pilot with over 450.000 Qantas passengers, the digital card is expanding to major gateways and will be phased in for all airlines over the coming months.

Paper forms remain available for passengers without smart devices, those encountering technical errors, or those who travel unexpectedly. The digital declaration does not replace your visa or Electronic Authority (ETA)

According to Home Affaairs Minister Tony Burke, the measures will allow travellers to register their customs data and declaration up to three days before their trip, which aims to reduce waiting times and procedures when landing.

The Minister of Trade and Tourism, Dan Farrell said that the digitization of border processes will be key to managing the expected increase in visitors ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

With this measure, Australia intends to project itself as a more accessible and modern destination, strengthen its border management capacity and offering a more fluid experience to international tourists.
