Niterói, Brazil | Inaugurated a Solar Park Helping to Save $1.25 Million a Year

The prefecture of Niterói, a centre in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, often called “Cidade Sorriso” (Smile City), a prime location across the Guanabara Bay from Rio, offering a quieter atmosphere and a stellar quality of life, celebrated for its stunning Atlantic - facing beaches like Itacoatiara, panoramic lookouts, and striking architecture by Oscar Niemeyer,  inaugurated a solar park at the top of Morro do Boa Vista, a prominent hilltop location, best known for its panoramic views of the Guanabara Bay, the historic São Lourenço district, and iconic Rio de Janeiro landmarks.

According to Agência Brasil, a nationwide public news agency headquartered in Brasilia and run by the Brazilian government, the solar park occupies an area of 36.000 square metres with more than 2.000 photovoltaic modules.

The pilot project, which required an investment of approximately $1.75 million, will generate about 150.000 kWh per month, enough to supply 19 municipal nurseries, and will allow an annual saving savings of $1.25 million on the electricity bill, which means that the investment will be recouped in just two years.

In addition to the energy benefit, the initiative included infrastructure interventions in the Boa Vista community, which is home to almost 1.800 inhabitants. The development also included vegetation restoration, drainage systems and a rainwater harvesting system with a capacity of 30.000 liters, which will serve to clean solar panels, support firefighting and prevent erosion on hillsides.

Depending on the pilot’s evaluation, the module could be extended to other communities across the city.

The initiative comes at a time of strong expansion of solar energy in Brazil, which grew by 24.7% between 2024 and 2025 and already represents 11% of the national electricity matrix, consolidating itself as the third most important source in the country.

Community solar parks in Brazil are helping drive significant cost savings, with major infrastructure investments and cooperatives such as those funded by developers like Enegea cutting energy costs and reducing carbon footprints for thousands of local residents and businesses.
