Phong - Nha - Kẻ Bàng National Park, Vietnam | Discovered a Cave with an Extraordinary Dense Concentration of White Cave Pearls

A team of scientists has discovered a spectacular, 3 kilometre - long cave named Thang (Victory) in the UNESCO – listed Phong - Nha - Kẻ Bàng National Park,  a protected area within Quang Tri province  in north - central Vietnam bordering Him Namno Reserve in Laos, characterized by mountains., tropical forests, underground rivers, and known for its limestone karst network of caves.

The cave situated between Elephant Cave and Ma Da Lake sitting entirely within  a strictly protected zone, was located after a six - day expedition carried out by specialists in coordination with the national park administration.

Thang Cave features two entrances, one of which requires a 20 - metre abseil and  stretches for about 3.000 metres, has an average width of 70 metres.

The cave houses  underground chambers containing extraordinary towering 50 - metre stalactites, stalagmites, rock columns formed over hundreds of thousands of years,  and an unusual, extraordinary dense concentration of rare, pure - white cave pearls,  polished spheres formed by mineral deposits accumulating around a nucleus found in dense clusters within natural rock basins. 

Experts believe that, due to its excellent state of conservation and geological characteristics, the place has great potential to boost adventure tourism and reinforce the value of Phong - Nha - Kẻ Bàng National Park, declared a Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO.

After the expedition, it was proposed to incorporate the Thang Cave into a new eco - tourism route. The local adventure tour operator Jungle Boss has received in – principle tp include the cave in a new ecoturism itinerary.  The proposed route is a 2 - day, 1 - night adventure trekking experience that merges the new cave discovery with the existing Ma Da Valley - Tra Ang Cave trek.

This finding is in addition to the recent discovery in the Bac Huong Nature Reserve, also in the Quang Tri Province, where rangers located an unexplored cave with a wide entrance, multicoloured stalactites and an underground stream, reinforces furthermore the region’s speleological potential.
