St.Moritz-Switzerland | Illustrious and Legendary Roof of Europe.


St. Moritz is a more than popular resort in  Switzerland known worldwide for its prestige and fame,that illustrious and legendary roof of Europe situated at 1800 metres of altitude so famed to be  to be a very distinguished Winter Sports destination but also place characterised for its glamour,exclusive boutiques,fine restaurants and luxury Hotels.

That magnificent Swiss resort apart all those qualities also has a perfect Tourism organisation and all that makes it a Top Class Destination.Situated in the heart of the Alps of the Canton of Grisons,also called Canton of Graubunden,St. Moritz it is one of the oldest winter sports resort in the globe  attracting a multitude of people thanks to its superb facilities with a a mild climate offering 300 days of sunshine a year,a great incentive to spend pleasant holidays.

The official languages of the town are the Romantsch,German and Italian and one official name of the city is San Murezzan which is St.Maurice in Romantsch language,the Romansh is the most ancient community present in the Canton of Graubunden (I wrote a post about Bever,referred to that population in the case you are interested).

Located in the region of the Upper Engadine, on the river Inn,the city is subdivided in different areas such as  Sankt Moritz-Dorf ,Sankt Moritz-Bad,Champfèr Suvretta and Silvaplana.The resort of St. Moritz is a crossroad of Swiss and international tourist itineraries with several opportunity to visit the nearest Italy and Austria.

Thanks to its important geographical position,situated 60,0 km from Tirano,in the Italian Valtellina,125,0 km from Lugano and served by  important  rail lines such as the so famous Engadine Express is another train service linking St. Moritz to Salzburg and Vienna crossing the wonderful Swiss valleys and the Austrian Tyrol,a special connection of absolute charm offering during that trip unforgettable panoramic views of the best of the Alps.

Other more than relevant connections are provided by  the Swiss Rhaetian Railway,Chur-St Moritz,the Bernina Express Railway line RhB St. Moritz-Tiran, Railway line of RhB St. Moritz-Scuol,The Glacier Express, travelling between Sankt  Moritz and Zermatt are undoubtedly something unique and inimitable in its kind.

Absolutely outstanding is also its incoming capacity in terms of hospitality with over 13,000 beds one of its celebrated nicknames the Big 5 derives from the number of its prestigious and famous 5 stars Hotels such as Kempinski Grand Hotel,Hotel Carlton,Hotel Kulm,Hotel Badrutt’s Palace and  Hotel Suvretta House,five classic and famous hotels which are an absolute highlight of that resort.

St. Moritz is also a famed place to enjoy shopping a sort of little Alpine Milan providing in its chic centre boutiques and top shops with a vast range of high fashion design products,Cartier,Rolex,Armani Lous Vuitton,Dior and all the best brands are present since long time ago in that unique place of about 5,500 official residents and approximately 3,500 seasonal workers.

A  long tradition linked to the presence of its famous Casino consecrated the town as a Monaco at the foot of  the Alps,that is another special feature,which increased the popularity of that resort and when you are walking in its streets,you will immediately notice you are in a world where luxury in all its essence related to tourism,leisure,business,Spa & Wellness,a vibrant nightlife which makes it a famed Jet Set cross point.

All is simply at the top in everything,a significant site also ideal for meetings and conferences at the most high level,all that is also combined with a relevant cultural activity,a rich calendar of events,but also a place where the haute cuisine and the tourism linked to excursions in the Alpine valleys enjoying trekking,hiking and mountaineering complete a large fan of options,not easy to find in other destinations.

The prestige of that marvellous place is obviously linked to Winter Sports,that centre of the Canton of Graubunden  has the title and the record to be the first city in Switzerland to inaugurate a ski-lift in the year 1935, its curriculum in terms of winter sports events hosted is simply superlative,the resort was site of Winter Olympics Games in two occasions in 1928 and 1948 and for 4 times hosted the World Alpine Championships  in the years 1934, 1948, 1974 and 2003.

Due all that the Swiss resort received in London the Travel Winter Tourism Award,winning the competition ahead of such popular winter destinations as Chamonix,Val´D´Isere,Kitzbuhel,Cortina D´Ampezzo, Cervinia, Aspen and Garmisch-Partenkirchen,At that famous ceremony awarding the Swiss Alpine city attended 1,000 international experts of Winter sports.

Another step was achieved in the 80s when in occasion to protect its logo"St. Moritz,Top of the World"the resort registered its name as a trade mark in the year 1986 and it was first resort to do that and its name has been protected in about 50 countries.

 The history of St.Moritz started to gain importance and to have an outstanding fame for its therapeutic springs recorded in the 15th century,exactly in the year 1466 when the area was visited in summer as destination for its curative,uncontaminated  atmosphere and waters in medieval times,all that continued for long time,despite there was not an important and efficient network of connections.

Despite in the year1830 St. Moritz had only 200 inhabitants and its economy was not that it has today,the former village started to develop its first incoming flows with a tourism offering Spa facilities over the media.

There is a curious episode related to hospitality in Sankt Moritz dating back the 19th century.In the year 1864 the Hotelier Johannes Badrutt had the courage to make a bet with his English summer guests with the promise that even in winter in Engadine the sun was very warm and ideal period to enjoy sitting on the terrace of his Hotel sunshine and excellent temperatures.
 
If the weather was not good Mr.Badrutt would reimburse the costs to his customers of his own pocket.The British accepted the proposal of that Hotel Manager and they came back to to Sankt Moritz at Christmas time,the surprise was great,with sunny days and they came back at Easter,tanned and very happy,from there the tourism and Spa in St.Moritz reached levels well known all around the world,it was that the winning key of success which was furthermore developed with winter sports and with all the several tourism activities later.

You can start the visit of Sankt Moritz from its door and at the entrance of the town in Badstrasse there is the  Engadine Museum which worth a visit,the exhibition is very interesting to discover the history of that Alpine Valley step by step in different periods with its traditions and culture providing a full overview of traditional lifestyle of the area.

It is definitely great introduction to start to discover that land and obviously Sankt Moritz too.The Museum is  perfectly organised in sections and it displays over  2,000 items,including, utensils,domestic interiors, furniture,costumes and some pieces dated the Neolithic,Bronze and Roman periods. 

St.Moritz Dorf is considered the historic centre of Sankt Moritz, with the Church of St.Maurice,the Schifer Turm and the famous shopping streets.

An emblematic symbol of St.Moritz is undoubtedly  the Schifer Turm the Leaning Tower,situated in front of the famous Hotel Kulm in the central square Schuplatz  and next to the Sankt Moritz Rathaus the Town Hall.That construction 33,0 metres high was erected in the 12th century as part of Sankt Moritz Kirche,the Church dedicated to the Patron Saint Maurice which was demolished in the late 19th century concretely in the year 1890.

That imposing construction is a landmark of the town and it has an inclination of 5,5 degrees.Developed on a square plan it has an arched doorway as entrance,on its facade there are meridian watches with Roman numbers on its facades and it is topped by a polygonal architectonic element over the belfry surmounted by a small dome.The demolished Church was dedicated to the Holy Martyr of the Theban Legion martyred Saint Maurice,a former church was mentioned for the first time in an official document around 1139.

In Mauritius Platz the square with the name of the Saint Patron of the town St.Maurice,next to the Tourism Office you c an see a sculpture in bronze representing Johaness Badrutt,that prominent figure who was the soul of the beginning of tourism in Sankt Moritz in the 19th century and that bust a work by a British artist called Nicola Cox is a tribute paying homage to an iconic local character. 

Worth a visit the famous Segantini Museum.Founded in 1908 and designed by  architect Nicolaus Hartmann,the museum hosts about 50 works by the famous painter Giovanni Segantini and it is is listed as a Swiss National  Heritage Patrimony Site and site of high interest in Switzerland for the relevant works it contains about the talented Italian painter who lived in Sankt Moritz for long time.

Giovanni Segantini is known as one of the pioneers of landscapes painting,the style of that artist born in Arco a centre of the Trentino Alto Adige,conquered many people for his realist representations of nature and daily life in the Alps,its backgrounds,colours and landscapes identified 100% the environment of the Engadin in all its essence,including the human figures often immortalised in attitudes and expressions were highly appreciated for their true images,as sort of photos in painting.

That talented artist  lived many years in Sankt Moritz and died in the nearest town of Pontresina,the town in his honour since the early 20th century hosts in his honour that very interesting museum dedicated to that great artist.

There are other interesting monuments and buildings to admire in the town and one of them is the Chesa Futura which is situated next to the Chanterlella Funicular,it is is a masterpiece by English architect, Norman Foster.The construction has a beautiful facade made of local larch clapboards,at distance for its sinuous shape it looks like a sort of boat with square windows, and it houses ten private apartments with a beautiful view of the lake St. Moritz Bad.

The artist in its representation used that kind of material which is considered in Switzerland one of the most sustainable materials and also liked to the traditional national use of it.The rounded shape of that building developed on three stories is linked by concepts about the sinuous formation of the mountainous territory it was not directly erected on the ground,the construction was placed on some steel pillars,a section of the ground floor is dedicated to a parking area.

Foster in his work created a combination of total avant garde and modern architecture but also linked to that local traditional use of timber and all that makes that work very special in its kind.


Next to the Rathaus lies Chesa Veglia which is another relevant building of Sankt Moritz,it is one of the oldest farmhouses of the resort dated 1658,it was purchased by the owner of the Hotel Badrutt Palace,Hans Badrutt in the year 1928 who took a building in decay and after an excellent restoration he started to develop inside activities linked to hospitality and gastronomy

The architectonic style reflects some traditional Alpine canons,developed on a rectangular plan with a charming arched portal with vault,square windows with wooden shutters placed on three levels on a white facade.Currently that very captivating construction hosts three restaurants and two bars.

The famous and prestigious Casino of Sankt Moritz is  located at the west wing of one of the most luxury Hotel of the resort the Kempinski Grand Hotel.Considered  one of the most important Casinos in Europe it offers a very  high quality in entertainment in a very chic atmosphere.

The famous Ivory Ball Lounge Bar is one of the most trendy and classy locals with major reputation and prestige in the world with its elegant welcome lounge offering a wide range of trendy cocktails before to start a visit inside the Casino with its French and American roulettes,blackjack, stud poker and several slot machines.

Via Serlas is the most exclusive street of Sankt Moritz in terms of High Fashion,a sort of little Via Montenapoleone of Milan packed by luxury shops and elegant boutiques,such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Bvlgari,, Dior,Cartier, Rolex,Armani,Versace and so on.

All the most important Fashion Designers are represented in this Alpine Swiss Resort because shopping is another of the main activity since long time ago.It is very easy to find along that street all the most trendy articles of the most fashionable Prêt-a-porter such as clothes,accessories,jewelry,handbags,stylish leather items,the latest models of Swiss watches and much more.

In front of the iconic Kulm Hotel you can see another sculpture in bronze called Cresta Rider,a work by the artist David Wynne representing a skeleton rider in position of start,it was erected in the year 1985 in occasion to celebrate the centenary of the foundation of the local Tobogganing Club,also that kind of artistic works linked to sport represent the local culture in a place which hosted several events of importance related to Winter sports.

At the mouth of the river Inn there is the famous and charming lake of Sankt Moritz the Sankt Moritz Bad an iconic local landmark,where the latest Hotels and Spa establishments were built.On the southern edge of flanked by the street Via dal Bagn and  the square Plazza Paracelsus where lies the French Church.

The highest point of Sankt Moritz is the Piz Spire with its 3,380 m of altitude while the Piz Corvatsch at 3,303 m and the Piz Nair with its 3,057 m are other beautiful and picturesque peaks overlooking the magnificent ski stations of Sankt Moritz.The top of the Piz Corvatsch is accessible by bus and cable car and apart the marvellous panoramic views it offers it is also a fantastic start point for brilliant excursions with splendid paths and great ski tracks.


The famous track Corvatsch Silvaplana,over St. Moritz-Bad, is one of the longest in Switzerland and considered the  main access to approximately 350 km of slopes.Around the Piz Nair there is the modern funicular which connects Sankt Moritz in approximately 10/15  minutes to Corviglia reaching an altitude of 2486 m.

Winter sports in St.Moritz are a mecca ,in particular skiing and snowboarding. There are four ski huge areas around the resort such as Zuoz,Diavolezza,Corviglia and Corvatsch,about 90 immaculate tracks are in the Sankt Moritz Ski Complex,with blue,red and black slopes.The most challenging slopes are situated in the areas of Corviglia and Diavolezza,those places are mainly suitable for masters and experienced skiers.

The Lagalb descent in Diavolezza is considered one of the most challenging tracks,the starting point immediaterly has very steep straight,changes of gradient and very sharp curves,there are also jumps and due the challenging level the tracks are always well prepared.

The area of Corviglia provides tracks for intermediate levels,it is a very wide area,but there is also a section which hosts the most important official competitions including the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup with its famous downhill starting at over 3,000 m in locality Piz Nair.

Thart track in some points has authentic walls,high gradients and it is particularly suggested for very expert skiers,it is not to have good skis,they are tracks where the skiers needs a level more than advanced.Corviglia also hosts the Snow Park which permits to practise two very trendy activities such as Snowboarding and Freestyle and those slopes are very appreciated by several experts of those specialities for the excellent quality,maintenance,facilities and space.

The resort is also sensitive to that trendy sport which nowadays is almost present in all the most important Alpine Ski resorts the Nordic Ski,with approximately 200,0 km of slopes,so also people fond about Ski Cross Country can find in Sankt Moritz a great place to enjoy that activity so famous in Scandinavia but with an excellent tradition also in Switzerland.

In addition to all that the Swiss town also provides an artificial ice-rink opens from July to April and the complex offers several chances,the opportunity to enjoy ice skating but also curling and lessons of Ice Dance,furthermore it hosts important sport competitions.

The resort also has a Skeleton and Bob track the legendary Cresta Run track Sankt Moritz-Celerina very famous for its prestige and its foundation dated 1885 (linked to that sculpure mentioned before) with its 1214,0 m of length and challenging slope  it is a great attraction of relevant fame in all the country and worldwide.

Apart winter sports this famed resort offers many other amenities and outdoor activities as excursions in the beautiful Alps,all that places where are developed the ski slopes are a mine of treasures also in summer season,Sankt Moritz is a paradise for hiking with over 550,0 km of  trails.

Mountain biking lovers can also find a sort of Eden  with over 400,0 km of spectacular routes with different  levels of difficulty.What is particularly attractive about that trendy sport on two wheels is the mixture of trails and several changes in gradient,paths along forests,dirt sections,beautiful and challenging climbs and a succession of incredible landscapes in a magic land packed by natural attractions.

Do not miss a a beautiful excursion aboard the Bernina Express train,which is one of the the most scenic railway in the world and it is a must.The mountains surrounding the valley and in the Canton Muragl, Muragl,Corviglia,the Glacier Grotto,Murtel and Furtschellas are part of a magnificent scenery to enjoy the uncontaminated atmosphere and landscapes of the Swiss Alps.

The Bernina Express is the Red Train of the Alps something absolutely spectacular,you can also take the train in the Italian town of Tirano in Valtellina in the county of Sondrio and reaching Sankt Moritz.


Fom there,the train crosses the valley and when you are travelling and you look behind you the wagons have a movement as a snake,something very suggestive and spectacular.The train runs along majestic rocky walls
all around there is a unique view of towering Alpine peaks,it crosses forests and beautiful are the presence of streams descending from those mountains .

A special highlight is to stop at the foot of the Bernina Glacier enjoying the spectacular image over you of that giant massif which reaches it is major altitude with the Pizzo Bernina with its 4,049 m.

That Alpine resort rich of charm,beautiful architecture and with a marvellous Lake at the mouth of river Inn is linked to several artists,Sankt Moritz was the "secret love"of the famous German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche,who discovered the Engadin in a trip in the summer of the year 1879 and he often came back in different periods,enjoying one of his favourite destinations.

The prominent French writer Marcel Proust in love with this Alpine resort for its natural environment and peaceful atmosphere lived for a period in Sankt Moritz and created there one of his magnificent literary masterpieces The Pleasures and Days.Prost confessed several times that Sankt Moritz was his perfect refuge to find inspiration

The noble lady Caroline Von Goldschmidt-Rothschild,was one of the most important figures to launch St.Moritz as a winter sports destination resort in the late 19th century.Many other prominent characters  in different periods chose St.Moritz as favourite destination the list is very long but really very impressive some of them can be mentioned such as .Alfred Hitchcock, Richard Strauss,Marcel ,Marlene Dietrich,Charlie Chaplin,Greta Garbo,Brigitte Bardot,Aristotle Onassis,Herbert Von Karajan,Thomas Mann,King Hussain of Jordan,the Sha Reza Palevi of Iran, the Aga Khan,Gianni Agnelli,the King of Spain Juan Carlos and Gunther Sachs among others.

 the Gourmet Festival in January is a great event for who loves haute cuisine,gastronomy in a week also rich of shows and performances by notorious artists.

Snow and Symphony Festival,Art and Symphony Festival, Opera Festival, the Engadine Cross Country Ski Marathon,Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow  and Jewelry Auction undoubtedly a rich calendar and for every taste,culture,music,leisure,gastronomy,sport,there is always something of important in that Top Destination in the Swiss Alps calling people from all around the World also for all that.

Sankt Moritz is also a place with curiosities and also famous in other aspects.One is that it was the first town in Switzerland to have the electric light in 1878 and worth  a mention also  the well known story of the little girl Heidi that famous character for children cartoons,movie and TV living in the Alps,a creation in a book by Johanna Spyri and the movie was filmed in an area of Engadin Valley close to Sankt Moritz and you can also the wooden hut which was protagonist of that successful series of entertainment on Television,Literature and Cinema.

Gastronomy linked to international cuisine thanks to the presence of several fine and stylish restaurants and the traditional local of the Engadiin occupies a relevant level.Some of the local products are the Salziz and the Luganega,typical pork sausages,the Engadin Ham is highly appreciated just like the Deer salami and another special highlight served as appetiser or starter is the traditional the Bündnerfleisch which is very similar to the Bresaola a notorious product of the nearest Italian Valtellina.

Also linked to that Alpine Italian corner are the Pizokel,which are pasta,similar to the traditional Italian tagliatelle,prepared with butter,cheese and chards and also adding cabbage.

The famous Capuns is a sort of pie using flour,eggs.dried meat,ham and cheese and rolled in chard leaf,very typical in the popular Romansh culinary traditions,the Fondue which is one of the national and famous plates of  the country is also present in that corner of the country thanks to an ample production of relevant cheeses, there are also many local cakes prepared with honey and nuts one of them is the famed Bündner Nusstorte.

St.Moritz has a small airport situated in Samedan,situated approximately  5,0 km away from the centre and  it provides national flights to Zurich,Geneve and Basel and some International to Paris,Milan and Munich.An major option is landing to Flughafen Zurich Aiport which is located at approximately 210,0 km from Sankt Moritz and from there there are services by Shuttle Bus direct to the resort.

 A visit,a trip or holidays to Sankt Moritz is a great choice,so pleasant to enjoy the atmosphere of that charming and famed place of the Canton of Grisons,its history,picturesque and beautiful landscapes,the fantastic scenery of those peaks surrounding that unique destination are very attractive spots to plan a trip to that destination,definitely a great landmark of a splendid country called Switzerland.
