Assoturismo – Italy | Need for Greater Investment in the Incoming Tourism Sector

Assoturismo, the trade union federation representing companies operating in the tourism sector of Confesercenti based in Rome through the thought of President Vittorio Messina who considers tourism a fundamental engine for Italy's economic growth, binds all that to figures to support its reasoning by pointing out that in the first six months of 2024 the total expenditure of international visitors in Italy should have reached € 23.5 billion which translated it means an increase of about €2.6 billion compared to the same period in 2023 but despite that there is a need for greater investments in the Incoming Tourism sector.

According to the President of Assoturismo, the confirmation of the systemic importance of tourism in Italy has shown an exceptional recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic but investments are needed to keep the system at competitive levels.

Italy today has reached the highest number of accommodation facilities and beds in Europe, relevant data confirm that with 230.000 establishments and 5.2 million beds out of a total of 637.000 establishments and 29.000 million beds in EU countries.

This varied reception system with quality standards equipped for tourist demand according to figures estimated by Cst, the Center for Tourist Studies that observes and interprets the changes in the tourism market for Assoturismo, in the first six months of 2024 local tourist presences in Italy should have increased by 3% with a jump of 7.5% as regards international visitors.

The recovery of Italy after the pandemic is therefore formidable and remarkable even if there are still problems regarding the workforce associated with an inadequacy of skills that undoubtedly slows down the recovery of the tourism sector.

In this case as an antidote or optimal solution to face this problem  it is necessary to invest to maintain the Italian tourism system starting from the labor factor.

All that also because it must be taken into account that there are various challenges to come, the first one and very remarkable, is represented by the Jubilee of 2025 which should attract approximately 30 million tourists to the country's capital, Rome, helping to consolidate Italy's leadership in religious tourism.
