Chile | Gastronomy, Key Role for the National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism


Chile, country located in the extreme southwest of the American continent, in western South America extending over a long and narrow strip of land between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountain range, the southernmost nation in the world and the closest to Antarctica, well known for its dramatic landscapes and for its natural beauty and rich cultural heritage through the Undersecretary of Verónica Pardo emphasizes the growing importance of gastronomy in the tourism sector Chilean.

Gastronomy plays a key role in the new National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism which has as its main objective in its framework to consolidate tourism as an essential activity for the sustainable development of Chile's regions linked to the vision for 2035 to be recognized for its sustainable tourism which contributes to the well - being of people and communities, environmental conservation and economic growth.

This strategy was created through an extensive participatory process with interviews, workshops, surveys and consultations with more than 2.200 key stakeholders in the sector among them are officials from the Undersecretariat of Tourism, Sernatur, the National Tourism Service responsible for promoting and disseminating the development of tourism in Chile, promoting rhrough government policies and programs, associations,  academy bodies, civil society, communities and local, regional and national authorities. 

The primary objective is to promote Chile as an exceptional destination by including gastronomy as a sort of backbone considering that 40% of the national tourism industry is directly linked to gastronomy and that visitors to the Andean country allocate 30% of their total budget to the culinary experience and not only landscapes and natural beauties but also food is a central pillar in attracting international visitors.

For the Undersectary this is the third activity that they do most strongly is eating in typical places Chilean food that is part of the experience to live Chile as destination and there are actions pushing people to realize that the country boasts good agricultural and aquaculture products recognized worldwide, very good wine, good chefs and cooks.
