Portugal | Algarve Leads National Tourist Accommodation Revenues

 

The Algarve, Portugal's southernmost region, well known for its stunning Atlantic beaches, suggestive, low cliffs overlooking sandy coves, picturesque, whitewashed fishing villages, a mild climate throughout the year and renowned golf resorts leads national tourist accommodation revenues in Portugal.

According to statistics on tourism activity published by INE, the National Institute of Statistics responsible for the production and dissemation of official statistics, as well as for the coordination, development and dissemination of national statistical activity, the Portuguese region's tourist income values recorded historical monthly highs in July and August, with total income interrupting the deceleration trajectory with an increase of 7.5% in July and by 7.8% in August reaching €948.1 million.

Another relevant figure is that revenues from accommodation increased by 8.1% in july and 7.7% in August reaching €765.5 million.

The Algarve was the region that contributed the most to total revenue with 36.6% of total revenue and 36.4% of room revenue followed by Greater Lisbon with 20.2% and 20.9% respectively and by the North of the country with 14.4% and 14.5% in the same order.

According to INE data, all regions of Portugal recorded growth with the largest increases occurring in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, archipelago in the mid-Atlantic with +23.4% in total income and +24.7% in accommodation and in Alentejo, geographical, historical, and cultural region of south – central and southern Portugal with +12.6% and +13.3% respectively.

In August, the RevPAR, average income per available room was €113.8 with an increase of 5% and the ADR, average income per occupied room reached €153.3 with an increase of 4.1% reaching an all-time high even if the West, the Tagus River Valley and Greater Lisbon recorded decreases while the highest values were found in the Algarve with €205.7 and Alentejo with €162.5.

In the month under review, the tourist accommodation sector recorded 3.8 million guests with an increase of 5.9% and 10.5 million overnights with an increase of 3.8%.

Considering the accumulated period from January to August overnights grew by 4.1% reaching 55.1 million, with increases of 10.5% in total revenues and 10.4% in room revenue, to €4,500 and €3,500 million, respectively.

According to IBGE, the Institute of geography and statistics, this increase is mainly due to overnights by non-residents, which grew by 5.2%, while overnights recorded a lower growth of +1.5%.

In August, revenue growth was transversal to the three accommodation segments;in hotels and total accommodation revenues of 84.7% and 83.1% respectively in total tourist accommodation increased by 7.0% and 6.8% respectively while in local accommodation there were increases of 11.7% in total revenues and 11.8% in room revenues, shares of 10.1% and 11.5% respectively.

As for tourism in rural houses and housing, representing 5.2% of total income and 5.4% of income from accommodation, the increases were 14.1% and 13.8% respectively.

In the month under analysis, the municipality of Lisbon accounted for 15.0% of total overnights, 5.4% of total overnights for residents and 20.0% for non-residents, recording an increase of 5.2%, with +4.5% for residents and +5.3% for non-residents.

Albufeira was the second municipality with the highest number of overnights, 1.2 million overnights  at a weight of 11.4% and there was a slight increase in July of 0.2% and a decrease of 0.3% in August.

Overnights by residents increased by 9.6% and those of non-residents by 4.5% with 10.8% of the total resident overnights and 11.8% of the total non-resident overnights.

Among the localities with the highest number of overnights in August, Porto stood out with 6.7% of the total overnight stays and Ponta Delgada, executive capital of the autonomous Region of the Azores with 1.9% of the total with the highest growth respectively + 6.9% and + 6.5%.

In all 10 municipalities with the highest number of overnight stays in August, overnights by non-residents exceeded those by residents.

Considering most accommodation options such as tourist accommodation, campsites, holiday camps and youth hostels, 4.3 million guests and 12.6 million overnights were recorded in August with a growth of 5.4% and 3.2% respectively.
