The Azores – Portugal | Gold Certification Achievement as a Sustainable Destination

 

The Azores, autonomous region of Portugal, an archipelago on nine volcanic islands in the mid - Atlantic characterized by jagged coastlines, dramatic landscapes, suggestive fishing villages and green pastures in the interior have been certified with the Gold Certification award as a sustainable destination.

The announcement of this important achievement was made by the President of the Government of the Azores José Manuel Bolieiro on the occasion of the opening of the Azores Tourism Summit 2024, an event that took place in Ponte Delgada on São Miguel Island, the capital of the Azores archipelago.

The President of the Government of the Azores wanted to emphasize that the Azores already have the gold level of certification as a sustainable destination that is awarded by the specialized company Earthcheck but is celebrating this further achievement that represents not only resilience but also a committed attitude for the future.

The aforementioned certification aims to ensure travelers a destination committed to sustainable practices and provide an ecological and quality tourist experience in line with the strategic goals of sustainable development of the United Nations.

The regional President also stated the need for the Azores to lead as example, promoting decarbonization and sustainability practices in all activities, with a focus on the tourism sector, in a mission of environmental responsibility and commitment to the planet.
