Argentina, second largest country in South America after Brazil, through the President Javier Milei, has extended the validity of the 7% tax on air and sea tickets abroad, by extending the validity of a national fund on tourism until 31st December 2027.
This tourism tax collected in full by the Ministry of Tourism and which expired on 5th January 2025 is collected through the systems of the International Air Transport Association, a decree that has generated discussions about its constitutionality, since the Executive is not enpowered to make modifications in tax matters delegated to Congress.
Originally the tax tied to the National Tourism Fund was created twenty years ago, in 2005, during the afministration of the former President Néstor Kirchner and it was extended again 2015 during the government of Cristina Fernández.
Tickets abroad issued from Argentina also include the aviation security fee, of $8.0, destined to the ANAC, the National Civil Aviation Administration ; the airport tax of $57.0, received by the concessionaires of the airports, the security fee, worth $1.40, referred to the Airport Security Police and the immigration fee of $7.0, charged by the Direction of Migration.
