Évora, Portugal | Proposal of a New Public Metrobus Resulting from the Ongoing Review of the City's Urbanisation Plan

Évora, the capital of Portugal's south – central Alentejo region, one of the country's most relevant destinations for cultural tourism, due to its well - preserved old town centre, still partially enclosed by medieval walls, and many monuments dating from various historical periods, including a Roman Temple, an ancient city listed as World Heritage Site by UNESCO,  highlighted by an architecture from different periods of history, picturesque white houses decorated with coloured tiles and suggestive balconies adorned with plants and flowers through its mayor launched a proposal of a new public metrobus, resulting from the ongoing review of the city's urbanisation plan.

The mayor of Évora, Carlos Pinto de Sá, speaking to the Agência Lusa, the Lusa Agency, the largest news agency in Portugal indicated that the metrobus project is recommended in the PU, Urbanisation Plan, which has already been presented and is now going for public discussion. 

The mayor of the Portuguese city summarised that it is public transport with its own lane and priority over all traffic to save time, and offers Évora a mobility alternative that allows many people to do without a private car.

This is a very ambitious, long-term project, but fundamental to building the future of the city, so on in depth discussion is required on how it can be implemented and obtain the respective financing. 

The coordinator of the PU review, Jorge Carvalho, also speaking to Agência Lusa, explained that the metrobus project includes the circulation of a type of electric bus in a dedicated and exclusive corridor with priority in relation to other routes.

According to the PU coordinator, the proposed route for the new metrobus route is 14.5 kilometres long with several stops and is essentially circular, developed with two axes, one to the north and the other to the south of the municipal territory.

Regarding the review of the city's urbanisation plan, the coordinator highlighted that the proposal new presented begins to conceive the evolution of the city based on the idea of a corridor dedicated to public transport.

The PU coordinator added that the entire city is designed with a sequence, mainly of pedestrian circulation, which then runs through squares, where people meet and where the authorities can stimulate the urban experience.
