Playa Paredón also known as El Paredón, a popular beach and surfing destination located on Guatemala’s Pacific Coast, known for its powerful waves and vibrant armosphere, situated in the municipality of Sipacate, within Escuintla Department about 36.0 kilometres west of Puerto San José, a small town known for its rich cultural heritage, a pristine coastline and the stunning Sipacate - Naranjo National Park, a paradise highlighted by lagoons, mangrove forests and sandy beaches covering an area of 20.0 kilometres long and 1.0 kilometres wide consolidates itself as the country’s fastest – growing destination.
This site stands out today as the tourist destination with the highest growth in recent year in the Central American nation, in Guatemala, one of the emergent countries in the international landscape according to a report by UN Tourism.
In 2022 Playa Playa Paredón welcomed 35.300 tourists the following year around 39.000 were reported and in 2024 Inguat, the Guatemalan Institute of Tourist set 42.116, with an average stay of four and five nights, according to information provided by the newspaper Prensa Libre consolidating itself as a very emergent destination also in region.
The economic spillover in 2022 and 2024 reached around 21 million dollars per year, while in the intervening year between them 16.7 million were filed, the media added, always based on data from the governing entity of the Guatemalan travel sector.
After the restriction of activities due to the Covid - 19 pandemic, the Hostelworld website selected Playa Paredón as the tourist destination with the highest growth in Guatemala and also in Central America.
Local businesses explained to the media that Playa Paredón stands out as the area that added the most beds to the offer of the region, not only hotels but also other type of accommodation such as vacation homes and flats to face the high and increasing demand of more and more tourists.
The President of thee Guatemalan Chamber of Tourism, Rolando Schweikert, said that “El Paredón” has increased lately and the profile of visitors it is attracting are in a high percentage young people who like surfing or enjoying other outdoor activities and the destination grew in very good quality gastronomic offering, with in addition the opportunity of combination of visits to historical sites as Antigua Guatemala and for its proximity, a trendy destination as Surf City in El Salvador.
Business owners Diego Calvo and Walid Nasser said that 15 years ago that black sand beach corresponding to “El Paredón” was a humble fishing village with less than 1.000 inhabitants, now it has 3.000 and access only by water.
In addition the two entrepreneurs remarked that Playa Paredón is currently a distinguished destination in Guatemala, while, on the other hand, analyses indicated that, with the current lodging capacity, the destination can receive more than 700.000 tourists a year, undubtedly a more than great performance for the size of Playa Paredón.
Inguaut Tourism Authorities about this year in terms of incoming flows said that after the 15% growth experienced in 2024 over three million internatioal travellers visited Guatemala thanks also to the support of emergent destinations as Playa Paredón.
As additional note at national level, the Head of the Department of Research and Market Analysis of the entity José Maria Aguilar said that the project of the Guatemalan tourism sector is to increase between 12% and 13% and be able to receive 3.400.000 international visitors.
