Cape Town, South Africa | Officially Inaugurated a Lifeline to Protect Endangered African Penguin at SANCCOB’s Table View Facility

Cape Town, vibrant port city of South Africa’s southwest coast located on a stunning peninsula facing the Atlantic and Indian Oceans has officially inaugurated a lifeline to protect endangered African Penguin.

This dedicated seabird nursery opened at SANCCOB’s Table View, is located at 22 Pentz Drive close the headquarters of the organization situated within the Rietvlei Wetland Reserve not far from Athens Road and Blaauwberg Road.

The Pamela Isdell Seabird Nursery is managed by the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds, a registered non – profit organization whose primary objective is to reverse the decline of seabirds populations, through the rescue, rehabilitiation and release of ill, injured, abandoned and oiled seabirds.

The Seabird Nursery that since its inception marked a significant step in conservation efforts for the critically endangered species is a new facility focused on the incubation, hatching and hand – rearing of African penguin eggs and chicks.

This site will incubate eggs and care for orphaned or abandoned chicks, significantly increasing SANCCOB’s capacity to support species. The nursery expands on chick –-rearing unit introduced in 2011, which was deemed inadequate to incubate eggs to to space and required hygiene standards.

With pressures on penguin populations rising, SANCCOB reports that over than 80% of the 12.000 chicks admitted to date have been successfully released back into the wild, and the the new upgraded nursery is expected to double this capacity.

The site also offers educational tours, reinforcing awareness of conservation challenges. Government support includes tightened fishing permit conditions and new shipping regulations to protect marine life, while plans for Cape Town’s forthcoming tourism strategy will place a focus on wildlife and environmental conservation.
