IHCL, The Indian Hotels Company Limited, hospitality firm part of Tata Group and based in Mumbai, boasting a large portfolio of hotels, resorts and vacation properties has announced the signing of a new Tree of Life resort in Pondicherry, officially known as Puducherry, the capital and most populous city of the Union Territory of Puducherry on the southeast coast of India and is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal , a former French colonial settlement in India until 1954, bounded by the southeastern Tamil Nadu State.
The city gained its significance as “the French Riviera of the East” after the advent of French colonisation in India, and the French legacy is preserved in its French Quarter with tree - lined streets, mustard - coloured colonial villas and chic boutiques, also highlighted by a captivating seaside promenade and passes several statues, including a 4m - high Gandhi Memorial.
The project of the new resort involves the restoration of a heritage - listed property that was previously recognized as “Patrimonie Historique” by Vieilles Maisons Françaises (VMF), an association founded in 1958 focuses in the preservation, defense and enhancement of architectural heritage and its environment, and highlighting the French legacy.
The property is located in Pondicherry’s White Town at the junction of Rue Suffren and Bazaar Saint Laurent Street, near New Sand Beach, designed to serve as a retreat, offering guests access to Pondicherry’s cultural attractions, including its colonial architecture and local cafes.
The future resort will feature 18 rooms and will include an all - day restaurant, a swimming pool and a spa and entering into the Tree of Life brand, a collection of boutique properties set in calm and serene hadpicked locations offering comfort, excellence in service and a chance to enjoy the essence of authentic India.
This addition will increase IHCL’s presence in Pondicherry to four properties, with three currently under development.
