IHG Hotels & Resorts | Commenced the Construction of a New Luxury Regent Hotel in Kyoto, Japan

A recent groundbreaking event for a new Regent hotel marks the beginning of construction of a new luxury property of IHG Hotels & Resort in Kyoto, charming city on the island of Honshu, famous for its numerous classical Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, many designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites, which embody its rich history as Japan’s Imperial capital of Japan for over a thousand years,  also known for its opulent imperial palaces, wooden houses, its traditional geisha culture, textile arts, beautiful zen gardens and refined Kaiseki cuisine.

The future Regent Tokyo expected to open in 2028 is a collaboration between IHG Hotels & Resorts and GI Capital Management Ltd., a Tokyo based asset manager focused on alternative investments.

The property will be located in the affluent Okazaki area, a central cultural district located at the foot of the Higashiyama Mountains, known for its numerous, shrines, temples, museums, historic villas, and home of iconic sites like the Heian Shrine, with its large vermilion torii gate, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Nanzen - ji Temple, and the National Museum of Modern Art.

The hotel designed around a central garden originally landscaped by renowned landscape gardener Kumakichi Kato over a century ago, a space that has been redesigned to blend modern luxury with historical elements, reflecting the hotel’s commitment to integrating architectural heritage with contemporary design.

The Regent Tokyo will feature 83 stylish and comfortable rooms which will offer a modern interpretation of the traditional “engawa zone”, a transitional architectural element in traditional Japanese houses, a space functioning as a veranda or porch connecting the interior rooms to the gardens and the natural environment.

The property will also include a “ryotei” restaurant that has a century long history with the premises originally developed and later used as accommodation and a dining venue for esteemed guests including the Japanese nobles and imperial family and state guests visiting Kyoto.

The establishment will enter into the Regent brand, well known to offer ultra - luxury hospitality, emphasizing sophisticated design, immersive culinary experiences through its “Taste Studio”, personalized service via the “Regent Experience Agent”, and unique local integrations.

Key features include innovative architecture with thoughtful design, serene spaces such as private pools and villas, gourmet dining, signature spas and wellness centres, and a focus on creating unique, aspirational experiences in iconic cities and resort destinations.
