Lisbon, Portugal | Promoting itself as Europe’s Pet - Friendly City

Lisbon, vibrant capital and largest city of Portugal, located in the western point of the Iberian Peninsula on the northern shore of the Tagus River, one of the oldest cities in the world, known for its rich cultural and historical heritage, outstanding architecture, scenic viewpoints, pastel - painted neighbourhoods, historic trams and soulful music echoing through old alleys, blending old - warm charm with a creative youthful energy is promoting itself as Europe’s pet - friendly city.

The Portuguese city is not just a destination for solo travellers or romantic getaways but is becoming increasingly pet - friendly inviting visitors to explore the city alongside their furry and beloved companions, with dog - welcoming parks, hotels, terraces and even public transportation.

Lisbon offers many pet - welcoming options for accommodation, dining and activities, you can find numerous hotels that allow pets, many restaurants have outdoor seating areas that welcome pets, and specific indoor establishments also allow them.

Popular pet - friendly activities include walking in parks like Jardim da Estrela, a delightfully maintained green space which is opposite the magnificent Basilica da Estrela in the western side of Lisbon and exploring districts such as Alfama, the oldest neighbourhood of the city, spreading between São Jorge Castle and the Tagus River.

With all that and more Lisbon makes it to discover its unique charms without ever leaving your pet behind, and could set a benchmark for other European urban destinations.

Turismo de Lisboa Visitors & Convention Bureau is recommending many itineraries around the city to enjoy with a dog.

The bureau suggests to start a stroll at Jardim do Campo Grande, also known as Jardim Mário Soares, located in the typical quarter of Alvalade in central Lisbon, along the street Campo Grande, a magnificent urban oasis and the largest garden in the centre of the Portuguese capital, occupying an area of 13.38 hectares, reaching 1.200 metres long by 200 metres wide. This green space boasts fenced dog areas, water fountains and shady corners to relax and it’s the perfect place for the animal to burn off energy safely while you soak up the park’s calm atmosphere.

Next, head to Praça de São João Bosco, a captivating square in the Estrela district, located halfway up the hill between São Bento and Campo de Ourique, home to a beautiful landmark, the domed Basílica da Estrela, where your four - legged friend can play and socialize in an obstacle - equipped dog zone while you enjoy a coffee on a nearby terrace.

Turismo de Lisboa Visitors & Convention Bureau suggests to end the day with a leisurely walk along Cais do Sodré’s riverfront promenade in a Lisbon’s vibrant and edgy neighbourhood, terminal of the ferries that link the city to Cacilhas across the Tagus River, known for its artisanal scene, historic docks and nightlife, and through the Portuguese capital’s downtown streets to take in the city’s vibrant ambiance.

On day two, venture to Parque Bensaúde, a tree - studded, 3.5 – hectare verdant space with picnic tables, public art and a playground located in the São Domingos district near the Torre de Benfica tower and neighbourhood historic landmarks, a hidden gem where you can both breathe in fresh air surrounded, an ideal place for cultural exploration too.

A further proposal is Jardim Fernando Pessa, a leafy neighbourhood garden with benches and bronze statues, plus a playground, located in Areeiro next to Lisbon Forum, near Avenida de Roma, named after Fernando Pessa, a famous Portuguese journalist for a quick post - lunch playtime, and then wrap your day at Cerco de Graça, a large public garden that include terraced lawns, a playground, a kiosk café, picnic areas, and an orchard.

From there, soak in sweeping views of Lisbon, including iconic landmarks like the nearest Convento da Graça, the Castelo de São Jorge Castle, and the 25 de Abril Bridge. With shaded lawns and safe walking paths, it’s the perfect spot to unwind before heading back to your hotel.
