Malaysia | Strengthening Higher Education Ties with Indonesia to Enhance Cooperation in Research, Innovation and Student Mobility across Southeast Asia

Malaysia is strengthening higher education ties with Indonesia through a partnership includes signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and joint programs focused on research, innovation, student/ faculty exchange alongside joint academic programs and co - teaching courses.

The cooperation also involves areas like health, science, technology and other key sectors such as engineering, architecture and sustainable development, an initiative which aligns with broader goals for regional integration in higher education, such as the ASEAN Higher Education Space 2025.

The two countries have reaffirmed their commitment to advancing collaboration in higher education during a meeting between Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin and Indonesia’s Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, Brian Yuliarto as reported by Bernama, a news agency linked to the Malaysian government.

A key outcome of the discussions was the proposal to establish the Malaysia - Indonesia Academic Consortium (KAMI), a strategic platform to promote collaboration in nuclear technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) , healthcare, renewable energy, aerospace and collaborative research projects.

The consortium will also support postgraduate student exchanges and the creation of a joint Centre of Excellence. 

Indonesia’s Education Fund Management Agency will now include scholarships for students to study at 15 Malaysian public universities, an initiative expected to open new academic pathways and strengthen people - to - people ties between the two nations.

Both sides expressed optimism that closer Malaysia - Indonesia cooperation in higher education, science and technology will continue to deliver long - term benefits for their people and contribute to the region’s sustainable development.
