Russia and China have agreed to collaborate on building a lunar nuclear power station, intended to power their jointly - developed International Lunar Research Station (ILRS), a project that is part of a larger roadmap with a goal of completion by 2035 or 2036, aims to provide a stable energy source essential for sustained lunar operations, which is a key component for long - presence on the moon.
During the 30th regular meeting between the Prime Ministers of Russia and China, Mikhail Mishustin and Ling Qiang, respectively, the two sides approved a roadmap for joint lunar exploration, including the implementation of this lunar power station, an announcement that was published on the website of the Government of Russia.
According to the joint communiqué signed following the meeting, the two countries agreed to strengthen their partnership in the creation of the named “International Lunar Research Station” , reaffirming their readiness to fulfil the provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding between Roscosmos, the Russian state corporation responsible for the country’s space flights, cosmonautics programs, and aerospace research and China National Space Administration regarding the station’s energy supply.
The station will be nuclear, providing a stable and reliable power supply, especially during the long lunar night when solar power is not viable. This effort is also part of a larger international project seen in a context of global competition, with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), U.S. government agency responsible for the country’s civil space program and aeronautics research that is also working to establish a lunar nuclear power source by 2030.
Apart this agreement concerning the development of the lunar power station, in the meeting Russia and China will also launched other projects of collaboration as a plan to develop telemedicine and artificial intelligence technologies to combat oncological and infectious diseases and in the field of nuclear energy, new joint projects are under consideration.
Other plans of cooperation include agriculture, with an experimental and demonstration zone for Russian - Chinese cooperation which will be established in the Russian Far East, taking into account the advantages of the preferential regime of Russia’s international advanced special economic zones.
In addition the two sides confirmed their intention to maintain progress in settlements in national currencies and to strengthen cooperation between credit rating agencies. Within the Group of Twenty(G20) and the Asia - Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the Russian Federation and China will jointly promote a reform of the global governance system to enhance the role of developing economies.
Finally, in the meeting the two countries announced that will strengthen cooperation in the field of trade in services, including such areas as tourism, transport logistics, information technology and computer games, as well as expand sectoral cooperation through multilateral mechanisms, including BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
In total the two countries signed 15 documents of cooperation following the meeting between the heads of government.
