Nigeria | Signed a MoU to Create a Coordinated Data Framework Driving the Country’s Tourism Planning

Nigeria’s National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NITHOTOUR) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a coordinated, reliable data framework for the country’s hospitality, travel and tourism sector.

The partnership targets long - standing gaps in data collection and analysis to support planning, investment and competitiveness.

Key features of the data MoU are:

·       Strengthened data collection : The two agencies will jointly collect and analyse data across a wide range of sectors, including ccommodation, transport, events and recreation,  culinary tourism, destinations experiences, and workforce trends.

·       Joint research and intelligence : The MoU establishes a shared tourism intelligence system to enhance planning and forecasting, with joint research outputs intended to serve as an official reference point for policymakers and investors.

·       Capacity building : The partnership includes initiatives to build national capacity in understanding industry standards, measurement frameworks, and global best practices.

·       Economic diversification : The initiative aligns with national efforts to diversify the economy and raise professional standards in the tourism sector.

·       Improved planning : By addressing data gaps, the collasboration aims to provide the necessary foundation for smarter investments, better training, and more effective tourism development strategies.

This coordinated framework enables better planning for business destination managers and government agencies, especially during high - traffic periods. It supports national efforts to diversify the economy and boost non - oil revenue through tourism, and aims to strengthen professional standards and improve Nigeria’s global brand appeal.
