Pedernales, the Dominican Republic | Set to Become a World - Class Tourism Destination, Driving Economic Growth Across the Southern Region

After decades of neglect, Pedernales, a province in the southwestern Dominican Republic, renowned for eco - tourism, pristine beaches like Bahía de las Águilas, and border access to Haiti is set to become a world - class tourism destination, driving economic growth across the Southern Region.

The province is expected to replicate the success of La Romana, Puerto Plata, and Punta Cana, creating thousands of jobs, new infrastructure and reducing poverty.

Pedernales is rapidly transforming into a premier sustainable tourism hub, driven by major investments.

Government initiatives include the construction of over 13 hotels with relevant chains like Iberostar and Wyndham, the Cabo Rojo International Airport, Cabo Rojo Cruise Port, a four - lane highway, and a border wall, developments which aim to boost the local economy through cruise arrivals, eco-tourism, with the purpose for high-value, low-impact growth.

The Paseo Maritímo and a fishing pier are already boosting the local economy and infrastructure improvements also include wastewater treatment plants, sport facilities, and road expansion, with social programs focus on education, small business support, and municipal upgrades, surpassing the initial budget by over 80%.

Additionally, more than 3.000 hotel rooms are under development, and agriculture remains a priority, with investments in banana, cocoa, coconut, and coffee plantations, as well as livestock and goat farming.

The government remains committed to sustained engagement with local communities ensuring that Pedernales becomes a model for regional development and economic transformation.

Key Aspects of the Transformation

•    Infrastructure and Investment: The development of the Cabo Rojo port allows for large – scale cruise ship arrivals, with significant direct economic impact on local businesses. Plans also include new international airport infrastructure to improve accessibility and hotel international chains like Iberostar and Wyndham are investing in the province.
•    Sustainable Focus: The region is prioritizing a sustainable model to preserve its unique, “untouched” natural beauty while attracting both adventure and luxury travellers.
•    Economic Impact: The transformation project is creating jobs and fostering economic activity in sectors like hospitality, transportation, and artisanal crafts, shifting the region from a previously low – economic activity area to a thriving tourist destination.
•    Future Growth: Beyond traditional tourism, Pedernales area is positioning itself for logistics and potential future – focused projects, including specialized, high – tech installations.

The Director of the Special Fund for Agricultural Development, Hecmilio Galván, emphasized that this transformation will be President Luis Abinader’s most significant legacy, with Pedernales now attracting major investments.
