The Gambia is aggressively expanding its cruise tourism sector, developing a new national strategy focuses to bolster infrastructure and increase arrivals, as highlighted by the recent inaugural call of the luxury vessel Oceania Sirena with 611 passengers at Banjul Seaport, as part of a growing roster of cruise calls recorded this year.
The African country is strengthening its position as an emerging cruise destination and the strategy focuses on diversifying its offering, including developing River Gambia routes to boost local economic impact.
A partnership between the Gambia Tourism Board and West African Tours, an all - inclusive, full – service, incoming Destination Management Company (DMC) based in Fajara, Greater Banjul is a relevant part of this initiative, started with a ceremonial plaque and flag exchange marking the startup of a cooperation that aims to place Gambia as a relevant cruise destination.
To support structured growth in the sector, the Ministry of Tourism and Culture is developing a national cruise tourism strategic plan in collaboration with the tourism board and key stakeholders, aimed at improving coordination and enhancing the visitor experience.
Among the oppoirtunities under consideration is the expansion of cruise routes along the River Gambia, a largely underutilised waterway that could offer distinctive experiences in the fast - growing river cruising niche.
River Gambia cruises offer immersive wildlife viewing, birdwatching, and cultural experiences through mangrove – lined waterways, typically travelling between Banjul and upriver sites like Kuntaur or stopping at Tendaba to explore the surrounding wetlands and Kiang West National Park.
Key features of these experiences include spotting hippos, monkeys, and crocodiles in the River Gambia National Park, visiting historic sites like Kunta Kinteh Island (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), traditional Gambian villages, and exploring the Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve via small, traditional boats.
Key Features of The Gambia’s Cruise Strategy:
• Strategic Growth and Partnership: The Ministry of Tourism, the Gambian Tourism Board (GTBoard) and private operators like West African Tours are collaborating to create a cohesive strategy for the cruise sector.
• Rising Arrivals: The country is seeing a surge in high – end cruise liners with the arrival of Oceania Sirena and Seven Sea Voyager, strengthemning its position in West African itineraries.
• River Tourism Expanding: Plans are in place to utilize the River Gambia for more in – depth, inland tourism, providing diverse experiences beyond coastal areas.
• Economic Impact: The boom supports the local economy, benefiting vendors, tour operators, and thed informal sector through shore excursions and cultural performances.
• Key Destinations: Tours highlight cultural heritage, including visits to historical sites like Kunta Kinteh Island, and unique natural attractions like River Gambia National Park, Kiang West National Park, Makasutu Forest, and Katcikally Crocodile Pool.
With a focus on infrastructure improvement and marketing the “Smiling Coast of Africa,” The Gambia is actively targeting a larger share of the West African maritime tourism market.
Activities & Promotions Manager at Gambia Tourism Board Lazar Kujabi noted that the economic benefits of cruise tourism extend well beyond formal institutions, reaching informal traders, artisans, and community - based service providers who engage directly with visiting passengers.
